Shilesh,

The Epson Monitor software tells you which cartridge is having a problem.
The 1270 was nice because it had separate lights of each. I have had bad
aftermarket chips before but they did not seem to harm the printer. I just
used another one and was okay.

It does not recognize brand new genuine Epson cartridges now and the red
light will not go off.

Paul has noted that there are some variations but I am surprised at how
large it is between your printer an mine. If all the driver settings are
correct then I would put some Epson color cartridges in it and run some
tests. A color test wedge might reveal a problem that is not obvious in
grayscale.

How did you get Epson to replace

I called their support number and the technician had me do several routine
checks and when the problem did not clear she told me she would have a
replacement shipped to me. They require a credit card number to cover the
cost of the printer before they ship it out so you need to be honest about
what the problem is.

I know! And now I have two of them broken! I really want to run a bunch of
ink tests with different MIS inks and I now I am scared to use the after
market chips. I have never had a problem with the chips on my CIS by the
way.

Thanks,
Martin

Tom,

You reset them on the carts but since I am only filling the virgin carts once, I was trying to save some money by recycling the chips. I think that I will be okay as long as I remember to put the chips on the carts before I put them in the printer! It would be better to melt them in place than to trash the printer though.

  Martin-

The only resetting I've done is with the Lyson carts and resetter. I
assume you are using MIS. Don't you have to take the chip out of the
cart to reset it? If so, I wouldn't be messing with a soldering iron.

Should be able to exacto knife them off afterward...

Gregory,

In general I agree with you and have my first 1280 set up with a CIS and MIS
VM inks. I wanted to try out the MIS FS, Neutral FS and Sepia-VM inks in my
second 1280 so hand loading empty carts seemed like the way to go until I
make up my mind which ink to stick in it. Once I do decide it will
definately be with a CIS.

Jim's advice on changing out the cartridge head portion of the CIS regularly
is good advice though. When I started with the MIS VM and the CIS I got no
clogging. Now 7 months latter I am getting an occasional clog and the
frequency seems to be increasing.

I'm new to this group, and may be sticking my nose in a thread where it
doesn't belong, but . . . Why are you going through the hassle of re-filling
cartridges, and re-setting chips? Just buy a CIS with 'read-only' chips and
be done with it . . . unless you are changing ink types frequently . . .
they are available from so many people these days . . .
