All--
As a point of reference, from a paper making perspective, ALL papers have
two distinct sides to them (even mould made papers): a wire side and a felt
side. The felt side is usually the more "textured" side, as the marking
felts on a paper machine have some pattern which the fibers (now more or
less looking like paper) pick up as the web of paper makes its way down the
paper machine. the wire side indicates the "wire" that is moving the web
of paper down the paper machine. it is usually a sort of mesh wire, which
accounts for the usually "smoother" surface than the felt side.
check out Concord Rag, or Museo, for instance and you will also very
clearly see two distinct sides to the paper.
It is possible that during the coating application the coating formula
adheres differently to the 2 sides, i wouldn't suspect that it would be i
suppose it's possible.
hope this helps,
sincerely
