Eclipse 2 sides differ

Eclipse 2 sides differ

2002-07-26 by jimhayes361

I couldn't believe it myself until it was pointed out to me from
someone at Blair editions.

Take two pieces of Ecilpse Satine bright white out of the box keeping
them right side up. Then flip one over and put them next to each
other. The back side is a little smoother. I was told that the back
side "may" have more coating, but at any rate that they print
"slightly" differently.

Any one else notice this- and knows how differently they print,
microbanding problems, etc that one might encounter printing on back
vs front? Which side prints better? I'm currently using VM inkset on
1280.

Or am I just seeing things?

Jim,

I print a lot on Eclipse Satine and prefer the smoother "back" sideŠI had
always considered that side to be the front though. I use a 1280 and have
used the VM, MIS FS and Piezo inks and have never had any banding problems
to speak of. Definitely one of two papers of choice for me.

I see no difference in print quality.

Ralph Roesler at Brightcube e-mailed me back to say that indeed the
two sides are different wrt texture- one side has more than the other.
He said they left the paper like this on purpose to please those who
like more/less texture in the paper. I specifically asked about the
190gsm version.

Jerry you're right because he confirms there is no coating difference
or anything else that would affect tonality- except amount of texture.

I think I've been unconciuosly feeding in the rougher side for the
most part, although this is the first time I realized the difference.
I tend to like the deeper texture. I can understand those who prefer
the flatter side tho<g>.

Re: [Digital BW] Eclipse 2 sides differ

All--
As a point of reference, from a paper making perspective, ALL papers have
two distinct sides to them (even mould made papers): a wire side and a felt
side. The felt side is usually the more "textured" side, as the marking
felts on a paper machine have some pattern which the fibers (now more or
less looking like paper) pick up as the web of paper makes its way down the
paper machine. the wire side indicates the "wire" that is moving the web
of paper down the paper machine. it is usually a sort of mesh wire, which
accounts for the usually "smoother" surface than the felt side.
check out Concord Rag, or Museo, for instance and you will also very
clearly see two distinct sides to the paper.
It is possible that during the coating application the coating formula
adheres differently to the 2 sides, i wouldn't suspect that it would be i
suppose it's possible.
hope this helps,
sincerely
