Setting up a beginner BW printing system - some more questions ...

Setting up a beginner BW printing system - some more questions ...

2001-08-31 by Jann Lipka

First of all I´m astonished by this groups vitality and nice spirit .

I´m learning quite a lot here while trying to figure out what setup
would be best for my printing needs .

I`m a commercial / editorial photographer with digital experience
stretched to custom profiling regular Epson printers .

I think what I need is a MIS Variable inkset ,
but I´m not sure which of my spare printers will work
best for the BW conversion - 1200 or EX ?

Next question is about Continuos inkflow cartridges .
Is it a way to go ?
Should I buy everything from MIS , or should I shop cartridge
piping and stuff somewhere else ?

Is there som big disadvantage of starting the whole thing
with 4 OZ bottles ?

Thank You for some suggestions :

Jann,

welcome to the group! I don't have any experience with the MIS inks, but I =
use
piezoBW inks with a CIS (Continuous Ink System) from nomorecarts.com.
Ever since, I have vowed never to use cartridges again! They are expensive =

and disruptive and the only reason to use them is to test an inkset. Check=
 out
their site to see which Epsons they support.

Enjoy as much sunshine as you can get this time of year in Stockholm!

Antonis

Jann,

I agree with Antonis and Jerry but want to point out that right now
the only existing workflows for the MIS VM inks are for the Epson
1160, 3000 and 1280. You mention you do your own profiling so that
may not be an issue for you.

I would forget the EX and suggest you spring for a 1280 over the 1200
if the budget will handle it. I am running both and the 1280 is
faster, quieter and has fewer (as in no) feeding problems. With
either one you would have the option to try the Piezo inks also.

The CIS from MIS does not have any chips on the cartridges and you
have to go through this cumbersome routine to fool the printer into
thinking it has chipped cartridges. Check it out on their website.
The NoMoreCarts CIS has chips and all you have to do is click to
accept the fact that you are using non-Epson cartridges. Mine pops up
every day when I go to print for the first time. A small annoyance
but better than the MIS solution.

If you are looking at B&W printing for SpectraTone Quad inks from:

http://www.lincolninks.com/

I was very impressed by their sample prints on a 1200. Wonderful
color and tone to the prints. This would be my first choice for
commercial work.

Martin.

Choices again ....
About Lincoln inks :
For 1200 inks don`t come prefilled in cartridges ready for
" plug and play "
it seems that I would still need to fiddle ( sorry ) with CIS piping
from
MIS ( and do the Swedish ( YES ! ) chip trick )
or
NoMore Carts ( ( but they Lincoln says -not interchangable with
NoMoreCarts Nalgine- what is Nalgine ?)

REfillable cartridges sounds in this group like NO NO because of the
air bubbles ?

The big advantage of Lincoln solution for me would be of course
ability to use glossy papers ( for those glossy customers ;-)).

I like that .

Would that soultion be much more expensive then MIS Variable ?
If I buy a CIS system from Nomorecarts will it come also with
some cleaning cartridge or Do I have to buy extra ?

Sorry for all those questions , but it is a JUNGLE ....
Anyway I just ordered a pack of Hahnemuhle Photorag ....
SO very soon I`ll have to set everything up .

BTW . I have ordered some things from Jon Cone , and those
came to Europe in just 48 hours ( YES including customs )
I was amazed , as it took 5 weeks for Amazon.com to ship me some
popular books .

Jann,

Actually I think the SpectraTone Quad inks would be great for doing a
cartridge refill approach. All the concern over cartridges, air
bubbles and clogs has to do with the pigmented inks. With dye based
ink get some virgin empty cartridges, ink and a refill kit and you
are in business.

If you like them and start printing in volume, refilling will
probably become a chore but to try them out this would seem to be the
least expensive path. $13.45 for a set of empty cartridges from MIS,
$10 to $15 for the equipment to do the refills and $180 (6 x $30) for
the ink.

I would check with Lincoln Inks to see if you need to run cleaning
cartridges or not.

The statement "4oz bottles $30@ bottle (not interchangable with
NoMoreCarts Nalgine)" just means that they use a different bottle for
their inks than the standard bottles that are part of the CIS system
so you would have to pour the ink from the Lincoln bottle into the
CIS system bottles.

Cleaning cartridges do not come with the NoMoreCarts CIS.

If you want glossy this is the way to go. Closer to an RC look than
fiber but excellent quality. They have some art papers you can print
on too. Contact them and see if you can get some of their sample
prints. The print color is different from the Piezo and MIS. A cool,
heavy selenium tone. If you look back on the list I reviewed some
sample prints they sent me.

If you go with them please keep us posted on your progress and
opinions.

Jann, the NoMoreCarts CIS comes with its own bottles. You would simply pour
the Lincoln ink into the CIS bottles. Lincoln's disclaimer refers to the
fact that most of the other ink suppliers, such as MIS, use the same bottles
so that you can interchange the caps - one less step setting up the CIS.

Nalgine is a type of plastic, like polyethylene.
