New PiezoTone blacks

New PiezoTone blacks

2002-09-24 by Martin Wesley

I e-mailed Jon Cone last night with all of the information that had been reported on the list regarding the issues with the premature fading of the PiezoTone black ink. Jon responded right away and, in brief, there are two alternative black inks in development which he plans to make available in several weeks.

Jon says the first black ink is a 100% carbon ink with higher Dmax and better fade resistance than the MIS-FSN black ink.

The second black will be the carbon ink with a metal complex added to increase Dmax above the 100% carbon ink but not as high as the current PiezoTone black. This will be less fade resistant than the 100% carbon ink but more resistant than the current PiezoTone black.

The current PiezoTone black ink will remain available for those who want the very highest Dmax. Jon feels that the problem with the current PiezoTone black is due to the use of software other than the Piezo driver.

These new inks sound very interesting and I am sure Jon will make a more detailed product announcement when they are ready for sale.

Really? If he feels the fading and warmshifting is a software issue, what
did he say about Imageprint (which IJM now sells)?

Its hard to imagine that the new pigment black will be a significant dmax
improvement over the FS-N given that it will not be as high as the current
piezotone ink....that doesn't leave much room for a dmax improvement...maybe
.05 units. The main advantage would be that it would presumably be the same
ink vehicle as the rest of the piezotone inks.

That is just complete crap. His current piezotone black ink fades and warm
shifts, period. Imageprint may use more pure black at 100% than the piezo
drivers...but it is absolutely ridiculous to say his ink doesn't have a
problem when it obviously fades and shifts in a week of light exposure.

I am glad that he is planning to offer replacement inks...but until these
are tested by an independent source (e.g., Paul)...I won't trust them as far
as I can throw them!

Sorry, Martin, with all respect;
this is all bullsh... as long as he doesn´t address this issue in
publicity and guarantees a full money refund for all sold new
PiezoTone black ink or for the whole ink-set if desired.
I asked him for a credit note today because I´m not willing to
accept a replacement ink, which I can buy at MIS much cheaper
namely for 16$ an ounce instead of 44$ at inkjetmall.
Jon is rapidly loosing my admiration, because I begin to realize,
that he isn´t the great developer of ink and software he
suggested to be, but seems to be a great rebrander.
