Not epson black ink, but Generations Enhanced black ink.

Jerry

And yes, if you have a profile, the color inks do give better blacks
than quad printing, but
you must have a printer/paper profile to make it happen without crossovers.

Jerry,

I'm finally printing with VM. Very nice on scenics.

However, I'm not getting the blacks I want on my BW street photography, so I
need more grit.

The Gen4 black sounds great, but I'm hesitant to spend on a profile at this
time. What exactly goes wrong when you incorporate Gen4 black without
profiling? Is there another way (an easier softer way) to solve the
problem?

Hi Glenn, I switched from VM to Gen4 black, no profile changes, nor
curve tweaks, nothing - I am very happy with it. I may have been
lucky with the printer (1290) as Paul has just done curves for it,
either way - it's worth a try, if it doesn't work, switch back and
run a half dozen purge pages - the inks are fully interchangeable.

Regards

Steve

Re: [Digital BW] MIS VM inks with Epson black?

2002-10-05 by Jerry Olson

You only need a profile for color inksets.

Try all the different media settings to see which gives you the best
blacks. Backlight film will give you the deepest
black you can get, but posterizes on some images, not on others. Give
it a try.

Inkjet printing has one fault that is very hard to overcome. It just
doesn't deliver deep blacks like
the darkroom papers do. Now if you were to use small gamut inks on
glossy paper, you could get superb
blacks, but only on glossy paper. Not for me.

Hi Glenn, I didn't see your posts here until now. The only reason
you'd need a profile is if you were switching to a full color set of
inks. You should be able to just swap in the Gen4 black and continue
printing. I'm sure there will be some small differences but the curves
should still work. I think Jerry has been doing this.
Most people working with the VM ink, or any other quad sets using the
Epson RGB driver are not using output profiles.

Thanks, Jerry.

I experimented last night with a Contrast adjustment layer, and my
landscapes got much better. Even the street scenes improved. But I think I
will go eventually for the Gen 4 black. I know this has been asked
repeatedly on the list, but I can't find it: can I just replace the MIS
black with Gen 4, or should I replace the cart and bottle and flush the
tubing?

No need to flush. The inks are totally compatible.
