For the price difference between the two cameras I think perhaps one could afford a Sigma lens or two? They're not really comparable cameras, from what I understand of the resolution as well as the physical sensor size of the Foveon chip in the released camera. Austin

As Technical Editor for Professional Photographer Mag., I have tested all digital cameras on the market, including the MF Backs. In terms of color fidelity, NOTHING touches the my Foveon. In terms of resolution, the Anti Alisaing filters fuzzy up the image by at least one pixel to reduce the dreaded moire/Xmas tree lights effect of Bayer filters. ALL monochip cameras are using flawed technology. With my large formater printer (Epson 9500) and various large digital output devices I have proven to the naysayers that you have to go "4 wide" in order to equal "3 depp." IOW, a Foveon camera with three 2k x 2k chips (12 Megapixels) putting out a camera interpolated 48 Megabyte file was equal to a 16 megapixel Kodak Pro Back when making a 30x40 inch print, which required cropping out 1/4 of the native data before the bicubic interpolation to final print size. The new X3 chip is now even better than the original Foveon ($50 grand system) for only $1,800 plus card and lens on a Sigma body. Word from photokina is that it blew away all current 6 Megapixel cameras of the Canon, Fuji, and Nikon ilk. The newly announce Kodak and Canon offerings may equal the Sigma, or not. Even if they win the "big print test," I can guarantee from experience that it won't be by much at 2 to 5 times the money. and, yes, I've heard the argument about proprietary Sigma lenses, but they are optically equal to the name brands at 1/2 the price, so that is not a good excuse. Well, according to a hands on test by a gentlemen who has owned and tested most of the major digital cams, the Sigma is SHARPER than the original Foveon with which he was able to make quite a bit of money. For $1500 street, I think this is gonna be a bomb tool to have. It doesn't have to be in the same class as the Kodak for the Sigma to be an awesome camera. And I think it's being underestimated based on speculation of the specs rather than results. Then again, while I appreciate the quality of a 4x5, I manage to "make do" with the results of 35mm and 2 1/4. I might manage to be pretty happy for maybe $2000 camera and lenses rather than the much higher price of the Kodak. With the Kodak I'd need to not only spend the $4000 on the camera but then come up with the bucks for the Nikon lenses as my Canon glass won't fly. There is always something bigger, better, faster, etc.. I'll test the Sigma and see if it meets my needs. And not worry about what I could buy if I spent another few thousand bucks. Why on earth are you interpolating anything, and why are you printing at 30x40? Why not simply print the best image this camera can, say, at 240 PPI to the printer and make a really nice 16" x 16" print? Once you interpolate the data, you are adding another level of "complication" to the equation, and therefore your comparison becomes diluted more and more. I'd dispute that 4M PIXELS of real data is equal to a 13M Bayer pattern as far as resolution goes. Also, you also didn't discuss the image size issue that I raised. Is the Foveon sensor the same size as a 35mm film size? I'm not quite sure what you're trying to say/get at here...but I really believe you've got some flaws in what said, or at the least, I believe you really need to explain your self better. There were many issues I had with the original Foveon sensor arrangement, which would lead to sharpness issues. The sensors would have to be perfectly coplanar with relation to the focus plane, and...they would have to have perfect XY alignment. That is VERY difficult to achieve in the lab, much less in a camera that has to bounce around and be used... The new sensor does not have this issue, as it has all three color sensors in the same piece of silicon. Regards, Austin

Video and still imaging are ENTIRELY different things. Video can handle the "amorphous" images it gets from three sensors...and as far as "better color response", that's another one of those things like "sharpness". I have been shooting full color capture and selling prints that look indistinguishable from film. I sold my Hasselblads when I got the Foveon because the results were just as good in my market. Now it's available for a song. No one would buy a 2 pixel camera. As far as sharpness for the others, if the MTF of the lens matches the well site pitch of the chip at the critical aperture, you have a greater potential moire condition, at some sympathetic frequency in the subject since the blue and red color "grids" are 1/4 of the total well sites. 3/4 of the data is simply not there. That's why monochip cameras have to pixel smear with AA filters or demoirize the file after the fact. I could never get the Foveon to moire exept under extreme conditions. It simply made the most "filmlike" color image I ever had. None of the other cameras could match it. Try a Sigma when it comes out. It will tell you more than I ever could. Claude

There are many aspects of an image, and just because one imaging technique "appears" sharper (or what ever) does not mean it's an overall "better" image, or has better "fidelity". Fidelity is accurate reproduction...and that means of ALL aspects of an image, not just one of them. I don't believe you are understanding the implication of my example of a two pixel camera being as sharp as it gets...yet the image is obviously not very good...
