I have seen Jerry Nevins's prints on Stonehenge paper, and they are
quite nice.

It will take a bit of tweaking the settings, but I'm sure you can get
great prints on it. Jerry Does.

Jerry,
Remember Arches Bright Whites 140lb ? Do you still have prints made
on this watercolor paper ? If so, how are they holding up in term of
inkfastness ?

I have used stonehenge quite a bit. It is a nice
paper, and quite inexpensive, but I finally gave
it up. It looks blotchy in the 60-80% range. I
was not able to defeat that attribute and finally
moved on.

Don,

(Second attempt to send -- first one crashed.)

What inkset and printer were you using that gave the blotchiness with
Stonehenge? I have seen that effect with Museo on my 3000, but it does seem
to vary with the ink and printer.

Paul,

I have used it with 2 inks and several printers,
and to my dismay, all had similar results. I have
used it with the 7000 and 300 with OEM inks, 1160
and 980 with MIS FS inks. I originally used
Stonehenge on the recommendation of Jerry Nevins,
who at the time used it for his gallery work.
After using it almost exclusively for several
months, we spent some time re-evaluating it
because of the blotchiness. It would seem that
this thick paper soaks the ink up unevenly, when
a lot of ink is laid down. Because of this, I
started to try other uncoated rag papers. I had
used a Somerset Velvet before, and did not notice
this same problem. I was looking for a smooth
paper as well, so I did a side by side comparason
of several papers. I printed a stepwedge on
Somerset Velvet, Somerset Textured (a rougher
version), Somerset Satin (smooth like
Stonehenge), Stonehenge, and Rives BFK.
Unfortunately, Somerset Satin was blotchy like
the Stonehenge was. (As was Somerset Textured.)
It was about a year ago, but I think the Rives
performed the best (with respect to this issue).
Since then, I have gone back to EAM for right
now, as I am also looking for a smooth uncoated
paper.

BTW, was the Museo that you were using with the
3000 an uncoated paper?

Sorry, that should read 7000 and 3000 with OEM,
not 300.

Hey Don

A while back, I used a fair amount of Arches Hot Press paper, which
comes in a number of sizes in watercolor blocks, or in deckeled edge
sheets. It is not as white as the Somerset papers. I was using
these papers with a 1270 + OEM dyes. The results were very good. A
collegue has of my photos framed on her wall, and it is 2 years old,
and rock solid in the fade department. I have read someplace that
Arches Bright White (?) is also a very good performer. The Arches
Hot Press, I can vouch for as an excellent choice for OEM dyes. I
might be going back to it for occasional black-ink only printing

Good luck.

Shilesh,

Thanks for the tip. I will have to check that out
soon. Since I have moved several times in the
last few months, (and again next month), testing
paper has taken a back seat to other
responsibilities. Once I am settled in, I will
continue the quest, and will check it out. What
was your source for the paper? Local Art store, I
presume?

http://www.cheapjoes.com is a huge art supply store in New York with
great prices and low shipping charges, and great service. They sell
Arches papers. They have a very large catalogue they send with orders,
listing hundreds of papers. Or is it thousands? That URL Might be

Re: [Digital BW] Smooth uncoated paper?

2002-10-17 by Shilesh Jani

Hey Don,

Yes, I bought the paper at the local art store. The sheets come in a
number of weights, some fairly thick. The blocks I have floating
around are 300 gsm (or 140 lb). For the heck of it, I just threw one
of them on the printer, using FSN inks via Piezography plug-in. The
print is .............not bad at all. There was no rub-off. I
remeber distinctly that when using OEM dyes the color prints were
rather muted in saturation. But the BW was actually very good. The
print I spoke of in my collegue's office is one I go look at quite
often. I have never been able to duplicate as good a print with the
FS pigments. But that is true for only this one photograph - it is
very luminous, transparent, I don't what to call it exactly. One
thing I have often wondered is: are dye inks to pigment inks the same
as watercolor to acrylic (or oils)? The former are more transparent,
and allow the underlying paper to assert itself more.

How's your panorama stitching going? Would love to see more of your
work in an exchange.

Best wishes.

Shilesh

Jerry,

Actually, I got some Arches Bright White not long after you posted on
the other list about this paper. Cheap Joe's, if I'm not mistaken is
located in North Carolina.

I still have a print I made some two years ago with this paper and
original Piezo inks and it's holding up pretty well.

But then along came EAM, and I kinda neglected Arches B.W. Maybe,
I'll give it a try once more.

Is the Bright white, hot press...a smooth surface...or is it cold press...a
textured surface?

Re: [Digital BW] Smooth uncoated paper?

2002-10-18 by Ken Carney

I have had some success printing on Arches hot press. See also http://www.inkjetart.com/watercolor_printing.html. As you no doubt know, it is important to print on the smooth (sized) side. With Arches, this is the side where you can read their logo. I have also sized the paper myself, as you would do for say, gum printing. It was pretty much a disaster, though the printer lived through it. If you want to get artsy, you can also do a hand-torn edge. Good luck!

Does anyone know if there is a smooth, uncoated paper? Perhaps one of the
Arches cold or hot press papers?

The reason I ask is that Somerset Velvet hits a dMax of over 1.9 with only
two coats. However, I'm not a fan of the textured look. It might be
interesting to see what a smooth uncoated paper would do.

Robert,

Arches Bright Whites is a cold press 140lb paper and comes in packs
of 10 sheets or more in 22 x 30". Its surface is slightly textured.
Its catalog number is 708-6000. I got mine from Cheap Joes in N.C.,
at www.cheapjoes.com

That has been my experience. I did one project
where I had made a drawing in pencil, then
printed with epson dyes afterwards, right on top.
The pencil shows right through.

I hope to participate again soon. Thanks for the
kind words.

I believe it is. But if someone is looking for
watercolor paper (or another kind) in NYC, a
great place with low prices is New York Central
Art Supply. They are located on 3rd avenue at
11th Street. Paper department is right inside the
door, upstairs. Their website is
http://www.nycentralart.com where you can request
a catalog. I would guess that they will ship
large sheets of paper, but I always went in
person.

Arches bright white is well textured, probably cold pressed.
