Book opinions sought

2002-11-23 by Tim Timmermans

Is anyone here familiar with the book "Photoshop 7.0 for
Photographers" by Martin Evening?

Has it proved to be more valuable, interesting, or easier to
understand than the other books out there? Does it really speak more
to photographers than the other books? Just curious.

Hi there...
I have checked out the book, and found it pretty nice and understandable.
I'm a designer, and I can use photoshop fluently (it's become part of my life and daily job), reading martin evening's book was really a breakthrough, since I mostly know the stuff he's talking about, but I just not realize it usable for photography too.....
But before read it, better you have a good grasp of layers and masking...these two are the heart of photoshop....

I have the 6.0 version and it is excellent. I can't compare it to
other books, but it is truly aimed at the photographer and I doubt
that anyone here would find it a poor investment.

I use it as a reference book, to look up specific things, rather than
a front-to-back tutorial. It's not a "dummies" type book and I'm a
relative beginner, but I find it very helpful. A lot of the material
is for color work of course. The quality of the printing and
illustrations is top notch. I have no hesitation in recommending it.

I've found Martin Evenings Book a crucial reference, and should be very
highly recommended, along with "Real World PhotoShop 7 - Blatner Fraser".

Now we're at it, what is considered to be a good *introduction* to
Photoshop? Having 6.0 installed at the moment, but maybe upgrading to
7.0 if necessary.
Thanks.

Martin Evening's Photoshop book seemed very good to me too. But it
did not seem to me to add as much to "Real World Photoshop 6" as RWPS
6 added to it. The appropriate edition of RWPS seems to me the best
first (or only) book. And the book which seems to me to add the most
to it for photographers is "Professional Photoshop: the Classic Guide
to Color Correction" by Dan Margulis. His negative opinions of color
management via profiles have been criticized as destructive, but they
don't seem to me to have much interfered with his relatively thorough
and sophisticated discussion of color correction.

I'm just getting around to upgrading to PS7 too; I was waiting for
both these books to be updated, but I've had them since late summer
and still haven't installed PS7. Maybe I should wait until "Real
World Color Management" comes out in February? 8)

Tim

I used to recommend the PS 6.0 version of this book to participants on my
Digital Fundamentals course for members of the British Institute of
Professional Photographers. I like it because it is written by a working
photographer; is project based (not just a menu based exploration of the
software); is in colour throughout; has the best chapter on colour
management you will read anywhere; has a tutorial CD

... and is reasonably priced.

I had one delegate say the he would have paid hundreds of pounds for the
book when he saw the cross processing curves.

Haven't seen the PS 7 edition - you could download the colour management
chapter from martin Evening's web site.

I have version 6.0, and it's great. I'm sure 7 will be even better.

RE: [Digital BW] ANOTHER Book opinions sought

2002-11-24 by Andreas Sullivan

Flashback to a few years ago, when I started messing around with photoshop.....
I found it pretty hard to understand layers and masking......But the more you play with them, the more you'll understand them.....
I will suggest to go to the library, read books like (don't buy them):
Photoshop classroom in a book...
Photoshop 6 bible...
read the section on masking and layering.....if it is possible, do some projects on photoshop classroom in a book...
Keep messing around with both features until you really understand what they are, and what they do...
I would suggest another book...called" PHOTOSHOP MASTER CLASS" It's an awesome book...written by: John Paul Caponigro....a photographer and a photoshop Guru......buy it and digest it....
My 2 cents on photoshop 7...it has a feature that really important to image retouching...it's called "Healing brush tool"
It's almost the same with "clone tool", but healing brush can make duplicate of the neighboring pixel more accurately...it also matches the tone and color....so the retouching would be even far more easier with this...

Tim,

I have found Real World Photoshop 6 by Blatner/Fraser to be an excellent
resource. I know that Michael Riechmann recommends the
Evening book.
