Switiching cartridges on a 1280

Switiching cartridges on a 1280

2002-11-23 by jeffleeg8

Hi:

I have a one printer (1280) setup and don't see getting another
printer too soon. But I would like to print B&W about once or twice
a month. How much ink will I waste using a cleaning cartridge to
clean out the color, do the B&W, clean out the B&W & reinstall the
color. I probably won't get a second printer until late fall next
year, which will probably be the 2200 at which time I'll switch the
1280 to a CIS system for B&W.

It is a "workable short term" solution to use one of the B&W
cartridge solution until then?

Regards,

Jeff Lee

Ps. Please accept my apologies if you see this message cross posted,
as I would like to order some paper and inks soon and need a
response.

I never used cleaning carts on the 1280 as they are needed only for
some inksets. MIS inks you don't need cleaning carts when switching.
PT and what-Lyson inks maybe do, I'm not an expert.

When switching from Epson to MIS or back the least ink waste occurs in
just running out the old ink in the nozzle as it only takes at most a
purge print to do this. Next most wastefull is when air gets trapped
in the head during the switch, actually a common occurance, and you
have to do some cleaning cycles and purge patterns to clear it. Next
most wasteful is if you remove an MIS or other 3rd party cart before
it is all used- re-installing it is tricky so you might as well throw
it away. The Epson carts OTOH, seal when removed, so they are good for
a few more insertions, removals.

Jim:

Thanks, I'll try the MIS. It will be interesting to compare it to
the Black only, Lab color 16 bit, 2880 prints.

Speaking of which, if you use Paul's curves I think they are all
published still for 1440 dpi. Quite some time ago I got some
experimental curves from Paul for standard VM/1280/PC/sRGB conversion
space/ @2880 dpi and have been having fun with them ever since on
Eclipse. Long printing times tho<g>.

Jim:

Can you forward those to me? I find that 2880 seems to be the best and
I have a lot of time on my hands (however I also have a Laptop that
can use a a printer server:)
