Wacom redux

Wacom redux

2002-11-27 by Tim Timmermans

I read the thread about the Wacom tablets and went out and bougjt the
6x8. So far I hate it. I can't draw to save my soul and I find I have
much more control with my optical mouse. The pad seems too big for
one thing. It seems to take the dimensions of my monitor screen and
reduce it to 6x8 so that the curser goes from end to end.

If I get the smaller one will it do the same at the smaller
dimension? I think if I had a smaller area to deal with I might be
more effective. I don't plan on doing any free drawing, just
photographic editing and such.

Does anyone think I'd be better off with the smaller unit? Has anyone
else had this same frustration as me and decided to stick with a
regular mouse or has anyone had the same frustration and ultimately
got the hang of it and became efficient with it?

Lousy drawers want to know. I still have another week or so to take
it back to Fry's.

Thanks, Tim

Tim!
This is the best thing going for input.
All you have to do is program the area of the tablet
you want to use.
I use only a 2x2 area approx.for two monitors,with that
area you do not move anything but your fingers.
The smaller tablets do not allow for selecting only a portion
of the tablet, you have the best tablet available period.
I also use a trackball for things beside drawing or retouching,
keep them both .

A minor correction to Don's post--my Wacom Graphire DOES allow me to define
and use a smaller area of the tablet (driver vers. 4.7.2-2 on Mac OS 9.1).
Not that you really need to, as the active area is already pretty manageable
in size.

Very cool tool, and they have worked out many of the previous bugs in this
latest version of the non-OSX driver (and shrunk down the extensions
required from about 16 to 1!).

I too never quite could master the pen switch...of course, I've never held
my pencil "correctly". Would end up clicking when I didn't want to, etc.
Fortunately, you can completely disable the switch in the driver, and if
necessary double-click by tapping the pen tip twice quickly on the pad.
