I was just given a 'new' Epson Stylus Color 900 printer (two years old but never used) at no cost. I'm thinking of trying my hand at some B&W printing (files from a new digital camera) and thought a low-cost experiment would be to buy / install a set of MIS Quadtone inks (MIS has pre-filled Quadtone cartidges for the 900). Does anyone here have any experience with this Epson model ? If so, I'll take any suggestions on setup, paper recommendations, workflow, etc. Thanks in advance. Scott

Good printer, Scott; I still miss mine. I never tried a quad tone inkset in it. It coped well with a variety of papers. The heaviest/thickest I remember using in it was Crane's 300 gsm uncoated cover stock, which wasn't very useful due to the dot gain. If someone gave me one (and I could find some place to put it!), I think I'd try Lyson's Small Gamut Photonic inkset in it if Lyson supports that. But I assume that would be a more expensive experiment. I think it would make a good printer for one of the MIS VM inksets, but I don't think anyone has developed the necessary (I guess) curves for it. Incidentally, the 900 is, I believe, one of the few printers for which Adobe's discontinued PressReady rip works. Sam Sam McCandless samcc@...

You've come to the right place. I haven't used that model but the articles at the link below have some good information for anyone just getting started. Clayton, Thanks for the link !! I've just skimmed the articles and have already found the answers to several questions. I'll spend time over the weekend giving it a more complete read thru. Thanks for all your efforts (you are certainly helping this newbie !). Sam, Thanks for the reply. MIS is only suppling the 'original' Quadtones in Epson 900 cartridges. I'd like to try the VM inks but I'd need to go the route of refilling virgin carts (I want to prove to myself that the printer is capable of generating reasonable output before I go this way). It appears that the Lyson Small Gamut inks are also not available in pre-filled Epson 900 carts. Looks like if things prove out with the printer, I'm likely to get my first chnace to dip my toes in the 'refill ink' pool. Thanks again, Scott. --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "Sam A. McCandless" <samcc@v...> wrote: > Good printer, Scott; I still miss mine. I never tried a quad tone > inkset in it. Scott-- filling virgin carts is a bit intimidating if you read about it, but it's actually pretty easy in practice--and the additional investment compared to buying filled carts is small (I did it for a 740, and found that re-filling is a bit harder than filling virgins) Matt > Sam, > > Thanks for the reply. > > MIS is only suppling the 'original' Quadtones in Epson 900 > cartridges.
