Now that the Epson 2200 seems to be readily available and given that
a number of people on the list have used it for a while, I wonder if
anyone could compare the results (B&W) to quad printing using one of
the older Epson printers. I use a 1200 with the MIS-VM inks and have
been pleased with the output. All things equal -- mainly my own
capabilities -- does the 2200 really provide much more upside
potential? I rarely print larger than 8X10. Is it better or just
different??

Thanks,

Steve

Without an expensive RIP I do not think neutral B&W is possible with
the 2200 no matter what workflow is used---and I have tried dozens and
dozens over the last few months. People who claim they are getting
neutral B&W prints from their 2200 using the Epson drivers I highly
suspect have not printed a B&W step wedge and compared it to one they
know is neutral, such as one from a quadtone ink set. The closest I
have come is printing through Qimage using ICC profiles off,
photo-realistic and -5 magenta setting. This gives me the smoothest
and most neutral 21-step wedge I've seen from my 2200 so far (on EAM)
yet there is still some slight green in the highlights. Much less than
anything else I've tried, but still there. It is the only workflow
that has NOT given me green-magenta-green-magenta cast transitions
through the wedge and with blocked up 95%+ areas.

That said I still love my 2200 for toned B&W such as sepia or
coppery-toned B&W prints. And the 2880 dpi printing capability is
quite wonderful especially if I print with Qimage printing software.

But I'll be sticking to my 1160 with MIS FS-N inks for the time being
for neutral B&W. Much cheaper too since I use a CFS.

As for how it compares to the VM ink set I cannot tell as I have not
used it. I will say though that I have not been overly impressed with
the VM prints I have seen. I suspect it's user error as they have been
prints with different colors in different areas of the print and I
guess the workflow can be finicky. If so then the 2200 might be better
if color-toned B&W is your game.

Best regards,
 Richard

I use a 1200 with MIS-VM and a 2200. The 1200 blows
away the 2200 for b&w. I love my 2200 for color it
prints beutifully. I have seen output on the 2200
printed with the various RIPs and they aren't bad, but
I much prefer a dedicated b&w inkset. Also the b&w
from the 2200 w/o a RIP will change color from an icky
green/blue in daylight to a pinky/silly putty color
under tungsten light. Somewhere in the transition it
might be neutral and actually looks pretty good, but
in general we don't need our prints to have the
personality of Sybil. So 1200 for b&w and 2200 for
color.

Sounds like you got the wrong cartridges. They do fit.

Hi-the cartridges I got where smaller then the Epson cartridges--they had one spring instead of two--when I clicked them into the printer the printer didn't recognize them and I got all red signals-talked to MIS and followed their instructions but now go--do I have to reprogram the printer or just give up--Walter

I noticed that after using the new clear carts that the original Epson
carts will no longer fit in the 2200. I'm not planning on going back
to Epson carts, but just a cautionary note that at least in my 2200 the
fit with the clear carts is tight and the pins were probably bent so
that the old carts no longer fit.

Carl,

Thanks for the warning. That's more than a caution, though. It's not
reasonable or acceptable for the MIS cart to bend pins. I would call
those carts defective.

Service through Epson will be very difficult if the Epson carts don't
work. Also MIS may fix or change their carts to be more compatible
and the new ones might not work in your printer.

When did you get your MIS carts? Any word from MIS?

Anyone else have this problem?

Bruce,

I've been using three sets of the clear carts with different inksets
for the past few months. I haven't contacted MIS about this problem
with the Epson carts yet. Next time I make a cartridge change I'll
check more carefully to see exactly why the Epson carts will no longer
fit. I assumed it was because the pins were bent, but I'm not really
sure so I'll inspect and see if that is really the source of the
problem.

The clear cartridges definitely have a tighter fit than the Epson ones.
But original cartridges still work in mine. I use my own refilled Epson
cartridges every now and then when I don't have a clear one with the ink
I want, and I haven't had a problem with any of them.

Thanks Carl,

I'm about to use the MIS clear carts, and I was trying to decide
whether to use up my Epson carts first.

2200

2005-04-04 by slmshooter

My 1280 crashed. Il oved it...especially with UT2 inks from MIS. No
profiles...just run it. Now I have a new 2200. HAd it two days. Assumed
I could just print my normal BW images ....and get average results
without lots of fiddling around. Instead, I am getting magenta tones
and inconsistancy in images. I just want to press the darn button and
get the rich tones I was getting from the 1280. Have I screwed up in
getting the 2200? Is there a simple way to get what I want....and the
promise of better image later as I learn the ropes? I am about ready
to take the darn thig back so your early repsonse will be helpful. All
I wanted was archival inks that didn;t clog. -

Quad Tone RIP might be what you're looking for. I have a new 2200 and
use QTR with the Epson UltraChrome ink. Very nice results. I still
have my 1280 with UT2 ink but I think I like the 2200 and QTR better.
Doesn't cost anything to try QTR. http://harrington.com/QuadToneRIP.html

With the UT7 inkset, the 2200 is very similar to the 1280 with the UT2
inkset. With the color UC inkset, use QTR or IJC to get good B&W.
