CIS and velcro arm attachment

2001-09-24 by Moreno Polloni

The information below is from tech support at nomorecarts.com, who asked
that it be posted in this forum.

>>The velcro included with the CIS kits need to be attached securely when
you
first get it. If it pulls off, it will never stick properly again - it only
reaches maximum strength the first time it is use. Please contact us for a
free replacement piece of velcro, along with an alcohol prep pad to clean
the printer first to insure a good bond the first time. Don't forget to
push the velcro down firmly when you install it.<<

When I first installed the CIS I had problems with the arm sagging, so I
took the rubber stopper that they give you to prop the lid open with, and I
mounted it on the inside of the lid in such a way that when the lid closes
the stopper rests on the base of the arm and holds it in place. Just make
sure it rests only on the arm and not on the tubing. The weight of the lid
is enough to keep the adhesive from peeling up.

I still think that the best solution is a redesign that spans the open area
of the printer, I just
haven't made one yet. I did install per instructions, but there's a lot of
leverage and tug on that
adhesive.

I still think the easiest and best solution, if you're having problems, is
to replace the velcro with 3M re-closeable, self-adhesive strips
http://www.3m.com/us/mfg_industrial/reclosables/pguide_shell.jhtml

These strips snap together and hold tight, and will not loosen or sag like
velcro. To do any better you'd have to bolt the support arm to the printer.

A redesign is necessary. I have had numerous incidents where the tubes sag
just enough to get snagged under the cart carrier. I am and/or have run four
machines with the CIS and all of them have done it at one time or another.
Usually when the machines are set for a run of a hundred images and left
unattended after the second image!!!! Murphy's Law.
