Problem: Jap carts won't work

Problem: Jap carts won't work

2003-05-07 by alnchiem

I need advice on how to proceed: I bought 7 Epson carts from Japan,
which are for the Epson 2100, and they are identical to the ones I
have in the printer, but when I tried to use them, the message says
its incompatible. I presume the chip somehow won't let me use carts
sold in Japan in Asia-Pacific Epson printers. (i'm in Malaysia).

Other than throw the Japanese carts away and consider it a lesson
learnt (in how not to arbitrage), possible ways of utilising the ink
in these incompatible carts, I think, are:
1. extract the ink from these incomptible carts and fill them into a
used cart., after using the chip re-setter on the used cart. Anyone
know how to extract ink from a 2100/2200 cart?
2. buy some extra chips (available from MIS?) and replace the chips
on the Japanese carts with these new chips. This seems much less
messy, but I'm concerned that the new chips may completely screw up
my printer. Has anyone tried replacing these 'extra' chips ?

Any thoughts on these two options, and any other ways to use the inks
in these incompatible carts., would be much appreciated.
Regards,
Andrew Lee

If you have the old carts lying around I would use the chips from them
on the new ones. The chip is secured to the cartridge with two tiny
pieces of plastic. You only need to cut the top one of these to remove
the chip. You'll see it as a flat circle just above the epson logo on
the chip. Cut it carefully and you can just lift off the chip. If you do
it this way there will be still be enough plastic left to hold the chip
securely once you replace the new chips with the ones from the old
carts.

You will also need a chip resetter. I'm using the one from MIS.

Good luck!

Yes, I think I will do it that way. Does a bit of glue on the back of
the chip ruin the chip's circuitry or info. content, do you know?

Many thanks,
Andrew

I don't know. If you cut carefully it won't be neccessary. I've found
that the chips sits firmly in place even when they're replaced. It's
also nice to be able to use the chips in other carts later on.

Re: [Digital BW] Problem: Jap-anese carts won't work

Hi Andrew,

I don't have any input regarding your problem but I am bothered by your
reference to "Jap" as an abbreviation.

In the USA "Jap" is an extremely derogatory and hurtful term. "Japan" or
"Jpn" can be used instead.

I'm sure there was no negative intent.

Thanks,

Rick Murai

Re: [Digital BW] The cultural divide (Was Problem: Jap-anese carts won't work)

2003-05-07 by K2 Chittin

Rick and Jack

I'm sure Andrew didn't intentionally mean to cause offence. Please
don't forget that the list is populated with multinationals.
Different terms mean different things in different cultures. Usage
in one culture may cause offence though would be totally acceptable
in others.

For example, the term "wog" is extremely offensive in the UK. It
used to refer to black people but is being used more these days in
reference to Indian/Pakistanies. "Pakkie" is usually acceptable. In
Australia, "wog" is an affectionate term for Italian/Australians.

Andrew is from Malaysia. They have some interesting terms and ways
of spelling things over there.

Not wishing to draw this out too much ... "knock up" in the UK means
to have a hit on a tennis court. You guys all know what it means in
the States. :)
