Has anyone tried using some of the 3rd party ink cartridges available for the 2200. I've seen them advertised at around $7.50 and just wondered if they gave some good results (and maybe without the bronzing effect). I've heard some people discussing using 3rd party inks with CIS and getting good result, but I don't have that type of system yet. Thanks!

I have the complete Archival 7600 inkset on order from MIS now. I'm going to refill my 2100 cartridges and see how they work. I'll let you know when I've had a chance to test them. In the worst case I'll have a cheap alternative for high-volume low-cost color printing while I might continue to use original carts for high-quality work. That's the beauty of the 2100, it's so easy to switch between inksets, so you don't have to limit yourself to just one, which is also the reason why I'm never going to use a CIS. MIS just announced their auto-resetting chips, which are also available for the 2100/2200. Might be something to look into if you're planning to refill. -- Daniel Staver Petraflux Web-design | http://www.petraflux.com Tel +47 22 35 44 57 | +47 Fax 22 35 40 66 > -----Original Message----- > From: str8shooter2u [mailto:str8shot1@...] > Sent: 6. mai 2003 14:23 > To: DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com > Subject: [Digital BW] 2200 3rd party ink cartridges > > > Has anyone tried using some of the 3rd party ink cartridges > available for the 2200. I have not yet ordered from these guys but their prices are attractive on Epson inks: http://www.atlex.com/Epson/inkjet_printer/photo_2200.htm Duncan --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "str8shooter2u" <str8shot1@h...> wrote:

I am using an Epson 1270 with MIS Ultra Tone Inks on different papers - Red River Glossy, Epson Glossy, Kodak Glossy. I am following the Paul Rourk workflow as detailed on the MIS site: http://www.inksupply.com/index.cfm?source=html/workflow_roark.html All the prints have a solorized/contrasty look. I would love to hear from anyone having luck printing with the Ultra Tone Inks on glossy who is not getting the solarization. Am I using the wrong paper? Thanks Eric Brotman

According to MIS: "To print on glossy papers use the PK black. To print on matte paper use the K black (Eboni). There is no middle ground. The PK loses is Dmax on matte paper and the Eboni solarizes and may not dry on glossy paper." Anybody heard of this thing? It's a densitometer and I just borrowed one, but I don't really understand how it works and I can' find anything about it online either. The person I borrowed it from doesn't know much either. It's giving me readings of 2.6 with matte black on EAM, and that doesn't seem to match any of the values I've heard on this group. -- Daniel Staver http://daniel.staver.no

Dan- I've just started using my 2200...and I really feel weird just removing the photo black and inserting the matte black hoping the PK will seal like it says (with no tape or anything)...I put the partially used one in a ziplock baggie. Does everyone really do this? Can you also do it with other colors? or just the switchable black position? I can tell you... I spent a FORTUNE on ink last week...was off all week and ran the printer to death trying to learn all I could about it...great printer IMHO but not sure it's really the best at everything...makes a hellova nice neutral BW matte print though...a very passable semi-matte or semi-gloss BW print (Lyson small gamut is still a bit better) and reasonable glossy BW...Color isn't quite as snappy as dye ink, but it's the best pigment I've seen by far...particularly on matte paper (though I just bought a bunch of the Redrock semi-matte on a close out at Inkjetgoodies that was really cheap and looks great). I'm looking forward to CIS for 2200... cheers, Tom O'Connell --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "Daniel Staver" <daniel@p...> wrote: > I have the complete Archival 7600 inkset on order from MIS now. I have put electrical tape over the bottom of the cartridge and stuffed it into a plastic sandwich bag, taken it out, used it with no ill effects. I guess you can plug it with a rivet instead. Eileen

Does everyone really do this? I just put the cartridges on top of the amplifier on my desk without any special protection. I've had cartridges lying there for months which worked fine when I used them again. The cartridge seals itself automatically when not in the printer, so I don't really think extra protection is neccessary. > Can you also do it with other colors? or just the switchable black > position? You can do it with all of them. At the moment I'm switching between the ultratone BW inkset, the regular color inkset and also some containg experimental ink mixes. At any one time there will be around 15-20 cartridges standing on my desk, not being used. Some of the cartridges I'm refilling have been lying empty and unprotected in my bookshelf for five months. Haven't experienced a single clog so far. I honestly wonder what you have to do to make this printer clog, it just doesn't seem to happen. > I'm looking forward to CIS for 2200... Daniel Thanks for responding. Yes I am using the PK black for glossy as MIS states. I still am getting the solarized effect. Are you getting good results and if so with what paper? I hear there is a general consensus that the MIS Ultra Tone Inks are just not up to the job of printing on glossy and the release of the Ultra Tone Inks was premature. But MIS does state the inks are in an experimental stage. Thanks Eric

But MIS does state the inks are in an experimental > stage. I'm not getting good results on glossy papers either, but I assumed that's because I'm using them in a 2100 printer, which isn't really meant to be used with these inks at all. The seventh ink, the light black, is causing problems I think. I get mottling in the shadow areas and find myself unable to get neutral or cool shadows. I've tried mixing a cooler black ink, like Paul suggested in another post, but I haven't been able to perfect the mix yet. I'm not sure I've seen solarization though. I've tried Ilford Smooth Pearl, Epson Premium Semigloss and Epson Premium Glossy. With so many other problems, it's hard to tell... On matte papers I get beautiful prints and have no problems even in the shadow areas.

I have printed the UT inks (actually my UC VM 4.3 mix) on a variety of RC papers using the 1160 and the standard old curves. The only curve that seemed very far off was the warm curve. I did notice that the RC papers show all the defects more than matte papers. This will be true with any system. I was amazed the prints were close at all. After all, matte and RC papers would seem to be different ends of the spectrum. Frankly, these curves are "canned" profiles. For really outstanding output on any paper-printer combination, tweaking the curves should be considered normal. If you want the best prints, learn how to tune your system. This is true no matter what RIP or system you're using. >...I hear there is a general >consensus that the MIS Ultra Tone Inks are just not up to >the job of printing on glossy and the release of the >Ultra Tone Inks was premature. But MIS does state the >inks are in an experimental stage. Of course, I disagree with this statement. For state-of-the-art longevity in B&W inkjet output, the PiezoTones and UT inks are it. UltraChromes are there if you use a good RIP and don't mind some dots in the highlights. If you want this output on RC papers, UT and UC are it. If you want this without dots, UT is the one. It is a new inkset and surprises do happen. However, aside from a mixing error in an early batch and the sensitivity to dye inks that MIS has found, I'm just not aware of any pattern of problems. I consider the UT inkset a major step forward. Expecting canned curves that were written for a different inkset and EAM paper to work perfectly on all RC papers with the UT inkset, however, may be a stretch. I'll send you my set of 1270 curves and information sheet. Perhaps you can send back some scans of the 21-step test file. Paul http://www.PaulRoark.com _____________________________________
