RE: [Digital BW] How to replace printer heads??

2003-05-11 by DanielPérez

I hadn't planned on doing it myself. I was looking
for advice on where I could get it done, price, etc.
or if it was even worth doing it for this printer.

thanks

Daniel:

Before you pay to have the printhead replaced, are you sure your
printhead is spotless clean, especially on the underside? If there
is any buildup it can cause problems (think of a partially clogged
shower head spraying in several directions). Check the archieves for
the "wet paper towel cleaning method". If all else fails AND you are
ready to have the printhead replaced, you can try the "cleaning
solution injection through the printhead" procedure. Again check the
archives -- it can't hurt if it is the last resort.

Re: [Digital BW] How to replace printer heads?

2003-05-13 by DanielPérez

Thanks for the help, I've tried both the wet paper
towel and direct injection. I found some "authorized
Epson service centers" that do cleanings(overnight
soaking, direct injection, re-alignment, etc) and can
replace heads if necessary. They charge $80 for
cleanings! ..plus another hundred if you need a new
head. I'll try it at least knowing I tried everything
I can on my own.

While I'm sure they can clean a head clogged with
dried up Epson inks, can they handle dried up
pigments?

I put a new head in my 1200; ordered it from National Parts Depot (about
$80), put it in, then realized that I couldn't align it because I didn't
have the alignment software, which I couldn't find anywhere (except for
some Russian guy who wanted to sell me a copy of dubious provenance). So
I took the printer to an Epson repair facility, they couldn't get it to
work right either, ordered another & installed it, and it still had very
minor banding. So I sold it.

So: it's not hard to replace the head, but difficult to get it to work
right. I wish I'd taken it to the Epson place to begin with.
