Scanning B&W negatives for Printing

Scanning B&W negatives for Printing

2003-05-28 by fools_luv_company

Couple of issues which I hope someone can tell what to do:
1)The CanoscanFS4000 FARE (dustRemoval feature) cannot work on B&W
negatives (the grains overloads it and it gives up). Is this true for
all B&W negatives? Tmax- 100, HP5+, HP4+, Tri-X are what I tried.
2)I cannot get rid of the grains even in PS: filter/ dustRemoval would
only take away my resolution and USM brings back the grains.

What's the best way to scan a B&W negative?

What's the best B&W negative to use for scanning?

Not exactly. It will not work on the classic B/W films like "Tmax- 100,
HP5+, HP4+, Tri-X" but it will work on the newer C41 b/w films like Ilford
XP2.

does anyone know the reason why it won't work on films other than
C-41 process films?

i have scanned a few B+W negatives on my Epson 3200, and all but
one seemed to work fine with the Dust/Scratch Filter in SilverFast

i plan on doing more testing before i reach a verdict though :)

Because, like the Digital ICE and things like that, it sees the raised area
of grain as dust. Since the silver is removed in color processes, the
emulsion lies flatter when dry.

These dust removal methods use an infrared scan along with the visible
light channels. A dust particle is opaque to infrared and will be spotted
out, whereas film features are transparent to infrared and are left.

So it ought to work on the chromogenic films, i.e. Tmax and HP5, as these
work like colour film and the silver is replaced by dyes during
processing.

The silver halide films won't work because the silver is still there and
is opaque to infrared. So all the grain is removed, and hence so is all
the image...

i am probably wrong, but i *think* that HP5 is a standard B+W film, and not
a C-41 process film. that is how i have been developing it in my dark room
anyway :)

that is true, neither HP5 nor TMAX are chromogenic
