The new layer dialog box appears if you use the menu or Alt (option?) click
the new layer button in the layers palette.  Once you select a blending
mode, it enables the check box to fill the layer with that blending mode's
neutral color.

I too prefer to do burning and dodging on adjustment layers, but on the few
occasions I use the burn/dodge tool, I set the "exposure" very low like 12
or 6 percent and make multiple passes to build up the effect I want.

BTW, there is a nice technique described to open up shadow areas at
imagingrevue.com (it's an excerpt from Katrin Eismann's book "Photoshop
Restoration & Retouching").  The article is titled "From the Desk of the
Photoshop Diva - Week Two: Extending Dynamic Range Without Bracketing!" and

I don't believe you can read the entire article on-line without subscribing

Tom,

She has a whole chapter in her book on exposure correction that is 
very useful.  The book is one of the best.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
