I hated my CFS system, but....

2003-06-11 by wolfmann37122

I had a 1280 with a MIS CFS system and it was a pain, mostly.
The ink dried out or something, I had to do endless cleaning cycles and the
dreaded red light came on all the time. A big part of the problem was the way
the cartridges are just held in by friction with felt pads ( unreliable) or zip ties (
awkward) . The chip resetter from MIS was a joke. I liked the results I was
getting with MIS inks though ( Epson Enhanced Matte). But finally I had
enough and got rid if it and switched to the 2200 . Now I am using original
Epson cartridges - which gets expensive soon. But at least I can count on it. I
can hit 'print' and walk away and expect to see a print when I come back.
Now I am reading about the new Lyson Cave Paint CFS system they
advertise at Calumet, but am reluctant because of the bad prior experience
with the other system.
I am hoping this one might work better on this machine because the carts '
clip' in very nicely - and stay in place - on the 2200. That might solve half the
problems with CFS's.
Any thoughts by someone about this ? Has anybody used the cave Paint inks
yet or seen/used the Lyson CFS system for the 2200 ? I'd love to get some
input before investing a lot of time and money into another CFS system. ...
Thanks !

You might want to consider refills instead of a CFS. That way you can
easily swap between many different inksets.

I currently have 26 cartridges. Most of them are refilled with various
inksets and a few are still Epson originals. I'd hate to lose the
flexibilty of having all those inks available by dedicating myself to
single inkset in a CFS.

This page has very good information on refilling the 2200:

Daniels, thanks ! I will check into it some more. At first glimpse it looks pretty
involved to refill the cartridges but maybe it's just the way the website is
designed.
Where do you get the virgin carts ? Which inks can you use with the 2200?
Do they have to be pigment inks or can you use dye based ink also ?
Thanks.

There are no virgin carts yet, but MIS are expected to release some
soon... Meanwhile I've rinsed old cartridges with tap water. When I
bought my 2100 last year I saved all my old cartridges in case I would
ever need them for something. Turns out I did.

It's not as difficult as it sounds. You basically make a hole in the
cartridge, glue a tube to the hole, make a vacuum with a syringe and let
the vacuum pull in ink from another syringe. After a little practice it
will only take you a couple of minutes to refill a cartridge. You can
get everything you need from MIS at http://www.inksupply.com. I
reccommend the Virgin Vacuum Fill Kit, some syringes and ribbon tubing.
And of course you need inks...

I use the Ultratone BW inkset and the MIS 7600 Archival Inkset. Beware
that I've been unsuccessful in getting these inksets to work on glossy
papers so far. They're supposed to be compatible, but I get excessive
mottling and roller marks from the exit rollers. On matte papers I have
no such problems and both inksets work fine. I don't yet know if these
problems are with the inks themselves or my refilling procedures.

Is there a back only ink set for the 2200 that you can refill?

Yes, the Ultratones work great on matte papers with the 2200:

You'll also need a chip resetter if you plan to refill old cartridges...
