RIP Software Question

RIP Software Question

2003-06-13 by Barry Koblenz

Printer =  Epson 1280 on MacOS9.

I am trying to print thru QXP 5 a brochure using graphics created in
Illustrator. Each graphic prints w/ jaggies regardless of whether it is in
tiff or eps.

Would such an issue be corrected by using a RIP? If so, what do you
recommend? The EpsonStylusRIP seems affordable, while ImagePrint @ ~$900- is
a bit beyond reach. As I have set up a LAN w/ Windows Server 2003, perhaps
that unit could play a role. I also have an OSX PB to which I wish to
ultimately port such projects. Thanks, -Barry

the easiest and cheapest approach is to create a pdf from your quark
file, then use Photoshop as a RIP by opening and therefore rasterizing it.
Then print out of Photoshop.
EpsonStylusRIP is a dog in many ways, IP is overkill for that problem
as you will need the postscript version.

If you can't export a pdf, you can always export an .eps, then go to PShop and
do as Tyler says...

I've never used QXP so I might be missing the issue. But I
think going to the OSX box you should be able to handle pdf
and postscript files directly -- they are built into the OSX
printing system.

Yes, OS X does PDF's, very poorly indeed. Just try a bulleted list from MS
Word and see what you get. With a rare few kinds of bullets, you actually get
bullets in the PDF, but it is sort of a luck thing, Some things it does fine,
you just can't count on it (for PDF's).

Other than that, I love OSX---it just isn't perfect.

*******
the right way to get a PDF (Adobe rec) is to "print" a postscript file and use
Distiller in Classic mode. Yeh, I hate the concept of going to Classic too,
but it works in this case.

To do the ps file you need to install a virtual PS printer in OS X. The help
section tells you how.

Maybe Acrobat 6 fixes all this?

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
