Inkjets meet the asphalt road of Politics

Inkjets meet the asphalt road of Politics

2003-06-13 by Editor P.O.V. Image Service

Unlike many, I am willing to put my money where my mouth is:

As many on this list are aware I am running for NJ State Assembly (our
lower legislative house).

I would like to point out a fact that may be of interest to all here:

1) In answering the 2003 Sierra Club Legislative Issues
questionnaire, I have offered a commitment to sponsor legislation (to
parallel that already passed in the EU) that would:

a) Prohibit sales in-state of printers designed to prohibit recycling
of consumable components (i.e. chipped cartridges etc.)

b) Prohibit state governmental entities from purchasing printers
incorporating design features meant to prohibit such reuse/recycling.

c) The legislation would be drafted to take initial effect one year
after similar EU rules.

Now back to your regularly scheduled channel.

What claptrap!

If the goal was truly recycling then Epson could simply be willing
to take back the old cartridges the way laser printer makers take
back theirs.

If you are truly worried about consumers throwing out ink cartridges
containing toxic substances then make THAT illegal. Here in MA
it's illegal to dispose of a CRT - contains lead - you have to take
it to a hazardous waste collection center.

Your proposed legislation is typical of the socialists who make
policy in the EU - trying to tell companies how to run their
businesses and design their products. That's why the Eurozone has
a 12.5% unemployment rate! It is no concern of the government
whether Epson makes chipped cartridges.

Hum. Well, technically, if they ONLY made chipped cartridges, that would be
true...but when they make them AND the REAL purpose of making them is to
prohibit others from providing ink cartridges for their printers...it's
restraint of trade. They could have made them, and simply not tried all
this patent/copyright scam BS that they are doing.

The automotive industry MUST allow aftermarket suppliers to be able to
provide replacement parts for vehicles...even fenders etc. which are clearly
a design item, as in, would easily fall in copyright jurisdiction.

What they CAN prohibit is other printer manufacturers using their
patents/copyrights...and this is clearly not the case with what chipped
cartridges are doing. YOU own the printer, and YOU should be able to use
ANY damned ink in YOUR printer you want. What they are doing, in my
opinion, should be illegal.

That guy who first thought of "Goverment of the people, for the
people" must have been a real diehard communist!

Unemployement is counted differently in the USA. Find out how it's
being counted and you'll probably be amazed!

Goverments are only elected by the people. Therefore, they are
irrelevent, right ???

IFF that's the case then it's up to the federal government to
enforce, not the NJ state government.

You are right - the Eurozone UNDERCOUNTS it. If Germany and France
if a student graduates from college and can't find a job and is
given a stipend to live on and take a few more courses he's counted
as a 'student', not as unemployed, even if he's not full-time. In
the US that person would be counted as unemployed and on welfare.

Is it just me, or is the irony of this post unbelievable??
