EPSON 2100 good with OS9, really bad with OS

Re: EPSON 2100 good with OS9, really bad with OSX

Extensive testing of Epson 2100 with OS 9 and OSX proves:

Exept that custom paper sizes cannot be used under OSX there are also serious quality problems with OSX when printing with the Epson driver at 2880 dpi.

Prints of RGB test target 2.88 with identical driver settings show:

- Under OS 9 the 2880 dpi print is very smooth
- Under OSX the 2880 dpi print shows numerous eneven fine line patterns (microbanding) especially in the lighter tones.
- An RGB tint (very light grey) of R242 G242 B242 is very smooth with OS 9 but almost dissapears and is uneven with OSX.
- The print quality at 2880 dpi with Epsons printer driver on OSX is really UNACCEPTABLE!
Is this a bug in OSX or in Epson's printerdriver for OSX ?

Any solutions?

Hello: For me, the solution was to download "Ghostscript" and
"GIMP-PRINT" from the sourceforge site. With OS 10.2.6 I get beautiful
prints. There is an option available to use "2 level" grey; ie: the
light black and black. I really like the results.

Jo,
Are you using the driver which can be downloaded from epson's site at
http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?
BV_UseBVCookie=yes&oid=14402&infoType=Downloads
I'm not sure the whole address fit up there, so it's epson's site
under downloads, driver for the OS X, dated May of this year.
I'm very curious to know, because I'm strongly considering getting a
Mac (I use a PC now) but I've been told by another friend that the
2200 does not work in OS X.

Concerning: My previous message: "EPSON 2100 good with OS9, really bad with OS"

I am living in the Netherlands and own the Epson 2100 (European equivalent of 2200).

On August 10 -2003 I downloaded the new Epson 2100 driver for OSX from the Dutch site.
	It was called: SP2100_16a.pkg
	(dated march 2003)

I just checked at the same site and saw they now have a new SP2100_16b.pkg
	(dated april 2003)

After installing and testing this be version here are the results:
- The microbanding has disappeared :-)
- The 2880 dpi prints are as smooth now as they were with OS9
- The custom paper sizes still do not work

I am really glad I can now achieve the same quality in OSX compared to OS9 at 2880 dpi.
Hopefully the custom paper size issue will be solved (probably in the -16c version;-)
It is a real pity that Epson does not communicate about these problems in old and improvements in new versions.
You just have to find out for yourself by coincidence!

But it seams I finally can stop using OS9 and only run OSX....
And to Scott: Yes.......I am a happy Mac user, just installed the Apple 23" HD Cinema display. Just great!

Scott,

The latest Epson driver seems too correct many of the earlier problems
in OS X. After installing the new driver, I now have the roll paper
and borderless printing features available and also a reduced (minimum)
  margin feature.

If you are interested in printing B&W images with minimal effort in OS
X look into QuadTone RIP; got to http://www.harrington.com for more
information (lookt at the bottom of the home page for the link).

The beauty of using QuadTone RIP is you can keep the Epson UC inkset
and still get great B&W prints by mixing the warm and cool curves
provided in the QT RIP setup. And you can print color using the same
inks and all the Epson features such as paper rolls etc.

David
