Bob,

try to test the heads alignment, from the same printer utility dialog box where you run nozzle checks (I assume it's there also on the 1280, as on the 1160 and 870).

Subject: [Digital BW] fuzzy lines across the page, down are sharp

I always stroke a 1-5 pixel wide black border spaced 1/2" out side the
print area. But lately, I notice the borders running the length of the
paper are getting fuzzy. The ones across the paper remain sharp. I
think this is something new.

Printing a test target, at 3.6lp/mm the lines across the page are
sharp while the ones going down the page blur together.

1280, EEM, MIS FSN inks w/ G4 black, Epson driver, perfect nozzle
checks. I can raise the print head from -0- to -1- and it gets a lot
worse but I can't make it better.

Anyone got any clues how to fix?

Bob Michaels

Septones or Imageprint for B&W on Epson 2200?

2003-09-05 by Tim Atherton

- so, I'm conflicted about this (among many other things....:-) )

at around a similar price, for printing B&W (in addition to colour) on my
Epson 2200 in a Windows environment, what's the balance of opinion...:

Imageprint RIP

or the Septone system (with cartridges)

?

Tim,

I just went through the same exercise. I chose IP due to the
flexibility of printing color or B&W from the same printer. I
received the software Wednesday and had a fine B&W print later that
night.

I did a head to head comparison with a co-worker today with
one of my silver prints from a few years ago. He strongly preferred
the digital version from IP.

If I could justify 2 printers, then perhaps I would've gone with
dedicated B&W, but I couldn't, so IP it is, and I'm tickled to death.

I actually have both IP and the Septone system. I haven't installed
the Septone system yet, so I can't speak to it. But (and I had this
dialogue with someone here a few weeks ago, so sorry if this is
repetitive), as I understand it, the Septone system does NOT require
you to "dedicate" your 2200 printer solely to black and white. When
you want to go back to printing with the original color Epson inks,
you remove the Septone cartridges and put the originals back in (then
run a couple of head cleaning cycles).

Just wanted to make sure the wrong impression isn't given here. As I
understand it, it should be no problem to switch back and forth
between the Spetone cartridges and the Epson cartidges (it probably
gets expensive if you do it every day, though, since you have to run
cleaning cycles when you switch, which wastes ink).

BTW, IP has worked great for me so far. I'm exploring the Septone
option just because. ANd I'll post a detailed report here if I ever
get time to make some prints....

You're probably correct. I would go broke swapping carts. I print
lots of color portraits, and will be printing a fair chunk of B&W
scenics. Let me know how you make out with the septones. They sure
were interesting, but I felt I'd need to dedicate a printer to avoid
insanity. For some of us, the drive to crazy isn't as long....

I'll be very interested to hear your first (and second) impressions of both
systems side by side.

I very much look forward to reading your observations on the septone
system vs. IP.

My concern with the former is the high price of the ink carts ($18
apiece). But I can't say that I'm crazy about the price of the IP
RIP, or Colorbyte's rather restrictive support and upgrade policies.

Have you read Clayton's review of the last print exchange? I found
it very interesting that the plain old, vanilla Epson driver on the
2200 coupled with custom Gretag-Macbeth profiles fared as well, if
not better, than these RIPs.

Thanks for posting the link to this. I was not aware of this at all,
and it looks like very interesting reading. Also, this moots the
message I posted right before Labor Day ("Print Exchange Idea --
please read (long)"), which was basically the same idea as what he's
already done.

BTW, I installed my Septone system. Unfortunately, I can't report on
print quality yet b/c there's a serious problem with the cartridges
(not just mine -- apparently, they sent out a batch that don't work
well).

On the one hand, this doesn't increase my confidence in the Septone
system. On the other hand, after they got the first call regarding
this problem (not from me -- I just installed mine on Sun.), they
immediately called everyone who'd bought the system and said they'd
be sending free replacement cartridges ASAP (which I hope is really
soon). So, despite the problem w. the cartridges, they get an A for
effort in correcting the problem.

I'll post again as soon as I get the replacement cartridges and have
a chance to run some prints.

Sounds good, Chip. Keep us posted.

Can you imagine Epson taking this approach to support?

BULLETIN FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FROM EPSON CORP.:

Dear 2200 owner,

We're very sorry to report that we've discovered our current driver
produces b&w prints with rather nasty metamerism. Please accept our
apologies, as well as the enclosed copy of ImagePrint 5.6, which will
correct the problem.

Well, we can dream. ;)
