any dig. users familiar with these 35mm???

Hello everyone - I would like some expertise advice here!!! all are free to reply!! I know this is a DIGITAL list but i know some of you started with or have used 35mm/SLR cameras in the past and might be familiar with these models so you can give me advice. I have an Olympus Camedia 3040Z and I would like to branch out into the world of SLR also. (or - if these are not good cameras below - what digital SLR or digital upper rank camera would you suggest for under $2500?) Thank you!!!!!!!!!!

I have access to the following (used) 35mm/slr cameras and i want to know which is the best or better brand and is the price they are asking a good one.

Thanks in advance to all who reply!

Cannon AE1 50mm lens $89.00 - $189.00
minolta X370 200 zoom $129.95
Nikon N70 autofocus $650.00
Pentax ZX50 autofocus 35mm lens $189.00
Cannon EOS Rebel G $150.00 - $180.00
Minolta SRT 100 $99.00
Nikon N50 35mm $299.00
Konica 35mm w/50mm autorefelx T $139.99
Nikon N220 (he might have said N22020 - he had an accent!) $349.95
Infinity Superzoom 330 $169.95 - $249.95
Minolta Maxim 7000 $160 - $170
pentax SS1 $250.00
RCA CDS-1005 $89.00

Okay - i am in the market for the best one out of the above (if none of them are good then please let me know!!)
for portrait work, possible IR and Black and White and just general use.

Thank you!!!

Michele

You can reply personally to reinah78@... or on the group. Please no flames - i will do research on my own also but I
just wanted to see if anyone uses or has used these and what are their strengths
and weaknesses and the better of the used bunch! thank you!!!

Shot Canon Ftb's for years with Canon FD lenses. I've got some great
scanned negs from that era. Switched to Nikon to go digital several years
back...and shoot a D1 now...I love it. I think you can get one for around
$3000 now...but you will need lenses as well. It sounds like a lot of
money...but the $$$ savings in film and processing is significant if you
shoot a lot...but the biggest saving is in time. It takes me about 1/5th
the time to go from camera to printer with D1 images vs. scanned negs.

I use the Canon AE-1 and it's a great camera. Very good quality if you
don't mind manual focus. I also usually use manual exposure, but the auto
mode seems to work well.

Keep in mind that to get these images into your computer you will really
want a filmscanner and they cost between 600-2000 for really good ones. The
Poloroid scanner is being replace by a new model soon and last years model
is selling for something like $599 and it is capable of making excellent
scans from slides or negs. It can scan a 4000dpi.

Michele,

First of all this is a *digital printing* list, not necessarily a digital
camera users list. Lots of folks here use only film cameras of different
formats. Others use digital cameras. Or both. Personally I only use film,
as I can't afford one of the few digital cameras that would meet my needs
for image quality and flexibility. I should also mention that I do a lot
of work hand-held in low light circumstances and digital is rather weak
there. I also like wide-angle lenses and most digital cameras don't go
very wide due to the nature/size of current ccd arrays.

I use Nikon cameras and lenses and am quite satisfied with them...though
I miss the light weight and silent operation of my old (alas stolen)
Olympus OM4s. I have a Nikon N70 among others and it's a good, flexible
instrument. Buy only Nikon lenses! It's the glass that is important. Film
cameras offer more choices both of focal lengths in lenses and films to
try, though digital cameras are handy I suppose.

The only problem with using film is that you then need a quality
filmscanner to get your images in digital form...and good scanners are
expensive.

Cheers,

Nina

As has already been pointed out this is a digital printing list first
and probably a digital camera list second. I have had many cameras over
the years, a couple of Canon A1's, an AE-1. For the last 6 years I have
been a Nikon Guy. I have an F100, F90X, F3 and an FE with about 11
Nikkor lenses. I have enough slides and negs here to scan to keep me
busy for the next 10 years.

Currently I scan all of my film with a Canon FS4000 (4000 dpi) scanner,
touch them up in Photoshop and print them on my Epson 1280 printer. I am
extremely happy with this combination. I am still learning a lot about
both scanning my film and printing out my shots.

A Nikon D1 will not give you the same resolution as a film camera, but
the new D1x's are getting close. The nice thing about Nikon is that you
can use almost any Nikkor lens ever produce on the D1x. There are a
couple of exotic lenses and teleconvertors that can't be used. Remember
that a 20mm lens on a film camera becomes a 30mm lens on a D1X and a
400mm lens becomes a 600mm lens.

This depends on your workflow and target output. If you are dealing with
8x10's and shoot in RAW mode my D1 does everybit as good as my SS4000 film
scanner when output to Piezo. The key is knowing how manage the files and
correctly sharpen. Resolution is not an adequate measure to compare Digital
to Film workflows. The D1x from what I've seen gets you safely to 11x14 and
probably to 13x19 with some care in workflow.

I also have a warehouse of Nikon lenses and it did take some practice to
pick the right ones to use with the D1. Added a 14mm to attempt to replace
my 20mm was necessary for me...unfortunately at double the weight and size.
I just finished a 6 week shoot that I shot an F100 and D1 side by side and
got pretty comparable images...but that's after 1.5 yr of practice. Of
course this lens conversion is one of the major reasons that the D1 (D1x)
has become so popular in sport and photojournalism...a smaller, lighter,
cheaper 300mm is packing the wallop of a 450mm...a fast light 180mm is all
that most people need...that's a big advantage in weight and $$$. I do miss
my 50mm f1.4 ...as a 50mm...but now it is a fast portrait lens instead...and
much less $$$ than a 85mm f1.4. So its give and take.

I'm waiting for Nikon to figure out how to make the sensor movable...then
you could flick a switch and have it either way. Contax managed to make a
camera that focused this way...I'm sure that Nikon could figure out how to
do it for a $5K camera.
