What is the experience with taking digital cameras and the memory 
cards/disks through airport security as far as any accidental 
erasing of the "exposed" memory??

Thanks.  I am thinking on going digital on my next trip to Europe.

Hi John,
I recently came back from a cruise and went through quite a few security
scanners in this country and the other counties we visited when we came back
on board.
I carried my Fuji S2, 6 smart media cards and a 1 gig micro drive.
Didn't have any lost pictures or any other problems. I'm not sure if the
scanners would erase a digital card like they have a tendency to fog regular
film.

Flash memory cards and magnetic media are unaffected by airport scanners.

Bring multiple flash cards at least.  A visitor I just had here lost all 250
of his digital photos when the camera decided to corrupt the files on the
card near the end of his trip.  With mulitple cards (or frequent backups to
a laptop or something), the potential loss is reduced.

Personally, I prefer the quality of film, particularly if this is a
once-in-a-lifetime trip, but that's up to you.
