Mac + 2200: QTR or OPM?

Mac + 2200: QTR or OPM?

2003-10-07 by sandersm@aol.com

I went back to look at Clayton's post of his conclusions regarding the tech
print exchange. I was surpried to learn that there was no comparison there
between OPM and QTR, running on a Mac and printing to an Epson 2200 loaded with
Epson ink cartridges.

After a false start down another path, I am left with the choice, at least
for now, between OPM and QTR. I'm running OS X but am not averse to rebooting
in OS 9 if OPM renders a better image. Paper: For the sake of argument,
let's say EEM and Ilford Galerie Smooth Gloss. (I'm looking at Moab Entrada
and the New Epson PremierArt papers as well.)

Which software should I install? And why?

Sanders,

I've used both OPM/IJC and QTR with a 2200 on a Mac. Print quality is
very good and virtually the same with either using matte papers and the
UC inks. So far, I've not been satisfied with the UC (or UT) inks
performance on RC papers, including the Ilford Smooth Gloss And Pearl
papers. Although you can find profiles for several paper/ink
combinations for both products, neither are "out of the box" printing
solutions (like R9, Piezo, or IP) and you should plan on making your
own profiles with either IJC or QTR to get the best possible prints
from the printers, inks, and papers you use. The workflows for profile
making and printing are quite different, but both IJC and QTR require a
densitometer or spectrophotmeter for final linearization of the
profiles. Software choice is up to you, depending on which workflow
you prefer. I am now doing all of my B&W work with QTR.

Carl, what inks are you using in your 2200? I'm considering
setting up an old PC running Linux to host QTR, so this was
a very timely exchange.

Thanks!

David

David,

I'm currently using the OEM UC inks, but I've also used the MIS UT
inkset for the 2200. The latter will give you slightly smoother
highlights, but since I'm doing a fair amount of color work right now I
switched back to the UC inks.

Sanders,
I've tried both OPM and QTR, and so far, have found QTR to give more
consistent
results. This is without tweaking the curves, and with EEM. You don't
even have to
reboot to run OPM, but it's not quite as convenient, as it does
require a switch to
classic. You might want to try both programs.
