Dumb Question

Dumb Question

2003-10-24 by Cara Curreri

Hello,
I am relatively new to digital photography and have a dumb question.
I would like to take a digital (color) image and print it as a b & w.
How is this accomplished? I have a Fuji FinePix 3800, 3.2 mg pixels
camera.

Is this accomplished thru software? If so, what product? I don't
have adobe photoshop. Is there something relatively cheap (s/w
package) that could be downloaded or shareware that accomplishes this
easily?

P.S. I have a HP 7350 Photojet printer that I am very happy with to
print these out on.

Any and all advice appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
Cara

Hi Cara!

If you are going into this with any seriousness you need to learn
what you are doing... at least to some level. You also need a good
tool to use. Photoshop is of course prefered, but costs huge
dollars. GIMP is free (!) and nearly as powerful.

Here is a good article about converting to b&w using GIMP (it's a
good primer for photoshop users too):

http://cs.uhh.hawaii.edu/~jeschke/photography/articles/gimp/Color2BW/

a google search will get you to a site to download GIMP from. It is
available for all platforms.

Have fun! (it really is fun:)

Hi Cara,

If you're looking for some freeware, look at Irfanview at
www.irfanview.com
Once you have loaded a color file, click on Images then Convert to
Greyscale. Of course Irfanview is limited, but it will get you
started.

Then there is a more elaborate graphic package at $49.95 called
Picture Window Standard Edition from Digital Light & Color.
www.dl-c.com

Once you have made some b&w prints, look at them in different lights:
sunlight, incadescent and fluorescent lighting. If the color changes
with the lighting, you have metamerism. Also look at your print to
see if there is a magenta or green cast. Making b&w prints with color
inks will do that.

This is a great group. You will find many answers here regarding b&w
printing.
Cheers,
Andre

Mark's right. But, remember, if you don't gain a certain level of proficiency, it won't be fun. This is like most other things in life. What looks like magic is usually due to someone's extensive preperation. In this case, yours.

It is great fun.

Any software will be able to do a basic conversion to B&W. However, for best
results, you want to be able to play with the colors, sometimes drastically,
before conversion. For instance, it's helpful to be able to darken or
lighten a blue sky in a landscape photo independent of the foreground.
Sometimes, this can be done by manipulating the blue channel, but what's
even more powerful in Photoshop is the ability to select an even narrower
color range and play with that. Of course, it's hard to visualize the B&W
result when you're still looking at the color image, and you've yanked the
colors around into some unnatural state. Photoshop lets you play with the
colors while viewing the image as B&W by using a B&W proof setup, which
works really well.

So the point, I guess, is that you get what you pay for. You'll find that
you can do a reasonable job in just about any inexpensive editor, but
ultimately you can get even better result by investing in Photoshop. Of
course, one could say the same about the camera and the printer, too. ;-)

Hallo!

Please excuse this dumb question.

What happens if i convert an image twice to a profile in photoshop (=>
QTR RGB Matte Paper for example)?

Take a look at the information and tutorials at Ian Lyons' site here:

http://www.computer-darkroom.com/ps7_colour/ps7_1.htm

If you are asking this question you probably need to understand colour
management from the ground up. Come back if you have further, more specific
questions.

You're welcome. There's a lot of helpful stuff there. Come back with
specifics once you've digested that.

If I understan you correctly, there is no problem. If you converted an
image to that profile once, then it is in that space. Converting
again, though it looks from the dialogue boxes like you may be doing
something, in fact does nothing. It's a null conversion.

Tyler, I hope your teaching in Seattle. If not they are missing an extremely
valueable resouce up there.
