I'm thinking of getting a C86 to dedicate to B/W printing using the MIS EZ inksets. I'm curious how this setup will be with regards to clogging. I've pretty much abandoned B/W on my 1160 due to all the hassles with clogs Thanks, JimD

Hi Jim I'm using a C84 with MIS EZ inks, I assume it must be pretty similar to the C86, it has proven reliable so far (about 10 months). Regards Andrei JimD wrote:

Andrei, Can you give some more details on what you mean by reliable? For instance, my 1270, which i use for color prints using the Epson OEM inks, has never had a clog that I couldn't correct by running a few nozzle cleaning cycles and then leaving the head parked overnight. I've had this condition occur fewer than 10 times during the ~5 years I've been using it. On the other hand, my 1160 using MIS inks has been a clog monster. Such a monster that I've given up BW printing until a more straight-forward solution becomes available. The C8n printers with the MIS EZ inks sound promising. Jim, I have a C84 set up with the MIS BW inks. Knowing I wouldn't use it daily like I do my 1160, I did some research on the C84. I found a recommendation to put a wet paper towel in an open baggie and put that down in the printer then put a plastic bag over the whole thing. I have done this and have had great luck. Most of the time nozzle checks are great - if not it only takes one cleaning cycle to get everything firing. Sorry about your 1160...a great printer. HTH, Linda

Jim, I've been using the C86 for about 3 months - with the MIS inks - and have had no problems with clogging. Am using the refillable carts and am very happy with the results. Hi Jim Obviously when I used the term "reliable" I needed some reference frame. I have used or am using the 1200, 1280, C84 and 2200 with MIS B&W inks. The 1200 and 1280 were run with a CFS. I did my purgings and nozzle checks religiously. None of the printers had problems ever with the original OEM dye inks. With pigment, both the 1200 and 1280 were creatures from hell (again no offense meant to those of you who are using these without headaches, let's just say, in order to be politically correct that I had bad luck with those units). I realized that I had started spending more time cleaning than printing, I did not want to specialize in plumbing. The 2200 is the most reliable (as in non prone to clogging) B&W unit that I have used personally. The C84 comes second, it has not been exposed to Windex yet, usually a cleaning cycle or two takes care of any missing nozzle problem, worst case scenario I use OEM carts to flush it. The C84 squeaks like it's going to come apart and is limited in terms of paper thickness but I have absolutely no complaints, a set of inks for the 2200 and the shipping for this unit are twice the amount I paid for the C84. I do miss the quality of the prints on the 1280 compared to the C84, I definitely do not long for the reek of Windex, ink soaked paper towels and whatnot. So from my own personal experience I would heartily recommend the C84 to anyone, with the EZ inks, it will not produce masterpieces of fine art but will function reliably and the cost can't be beat. The CIS/CFS use is a huge factor in reliability. I stopped using these devices several years ago. > I did my purgings and > nozzle checks religiously. The printers that are designed for pigments are more reliable with MIS pigments. So, the 2200 and C84/86 would, I expect, be more reliable than a 1280 or any modern dye printer. The most obvious and noticeable difference between a dye and pigment printer is that the pigment printer runs more automatic cleaning cycles. While this "wastes" ink, it may be the price we pay for reliable pigment printing. What I don't know is if people manually did the same number of cleaning cycles with a 1280, would it be as reliable as the 2200? The cart differences have also been significant. Before the sponge-less 1280 carts, I was about to drop all support for the machine and recommend against its purchase. The only problems I've had with the sponge-less carts may have been due to air leaks into the fill holes when I ran out of stoppers and tried, unsuccessfully, to seal them with tape. But, bottom line, desktop printers made for pigments (Durabrite, UltraChrome, & Epson Archival inks) appear to do very well with MIS pigmented inks. Desktop dye printers have had more problems and may need more attention. Paul www.PaulRoark.com

Paul, may I assume you were referring to using a CIS with dye printers? I've had a CIS on my C84 with EZ inks for about 8 months now, and have only had to run one or two cleaning cycles manually in all that time. (In fact, I'm on my second C84, the first one having died after churning out between 1,000 and 2,000 prints. I switched the CIS to the new one and just kept going.) I do turn the printer off when I know it's not going to be used for a few days, but otherwise I just leave it on. Cheers, Kip Paul Roark wrote, in part:

Kip, > Paul, may I assume you were referring to using a CIS with dye printers? Yes. Also, the pigments I used were the last generation of pigments. So, they could be better now with modern pigs and printers designed for such. > I've had a CIS on my C84 with EZ inks for about 8 months now, and have > only had to run one or two cleaning cycles manually in all that time. > (In fact, I'm on my second C84, the first one having died after churning > out between 1,000 and 2,000 prints. For very high volume printing, CFSs make a lot of sense. For someone like me who switches inks a lot, they don't. I would also not advise using them unless the printer is used very regularly. Hi Paul, do I understand correctly - you dont use CFS systems anymore? Actually I would not want to use Epson UC inky in the 2100 because of the excessive costs, but its also true that over the years I have had problems with the MIS CFS systems - mostly with the tubes squashing and blocking the printhead on its travel. Plus spilled ink when handling the loose tubes. regards, Bernie
