Epson 3000 - The affordable 16x20 printer

Epson 3000 - The affordable 16x20 printer

2003-11-12 by Paul Roark

It occurred to me that there will probably be a flood of Epson 3000s hitting
the used market as the 4000 replaces them. There are thousands of 3000s
used in industry. In fact, EBay seems to be getting the beginnings of this
flood now. The 3000s are selling for $400 - $500. (For a 16x20 printer,
this is cheap.)

Epson and others are also going to be selling lots more papers in 17"
widths - for the 4000. Some of these will, of course, also be good for the
3000.

So, I'm going to support the 3000 as the affordable quad 16x20 printer.

I'll load Ultra Tone inks into it first. (One must flush with a special MIS
UC base before loading Eboni.) I'll also make, at a minimum, a new
FS-N/Selenium (based on the UT inks) that will be Piezo and Epson curves
compatible. (I may also make an FS-Carbon if there is enough demand.
However, the UT inkset can print carbon, so I'm not sure it'll be worth the
effort.) Also, of course, cross-platform curves will be made for these
inks.

This should give B&W photographers on a budget a nice affordable 16x20
platform.

So, novices can start with a $69 C82 and then go to 16x20 for $400 and
change. (Add Picture Window for $50.) Not a bad deal for B&W photographers
on a budget.

Outstanding News Paul!
Please let us know when the flushing base
and Selenium are able to be purchased.

I know densiometer readings show that Eboni
is darker, but can one really tell by looking
that Eboni exceeds the blackness of other inks,
say the PiezoTone Ks or MediaStreet Gen4K ?

Thanks,
Alex

Oh, my Dog...Paul, don't get me started again!!! ;-)

While thinking about how I might swing getting a 4000 sometime
next year, it also occurred to me that (1) I really, really don't
want to have to pay that much money *again* in order to print
aritifact-free b/w on it (this is why my 1160 is staying in action
here, in spite of my just having bought a 2200), and (2) ...well,
having a "bigger 1160" *would* be fun, wouldn't it?

In short, once again I think you're onto something...finally, those
of us hankering for bigger-format b/w but up to now were unable,
or unwilling, to crack the wallet wide enough to do it in the past,
may finally get the chance to move "one size up" with relatively
little pain.

Looking forward to your progress with this.

Hello Alex,

After printing BO with the FS-K for many months I recently bought a
2200 and began using Eboni and am very pleased with it. The Eboni is
a bit warmer than a fresh FS-K print, but not as warm as the FS-K
after it has warmed. Testers have reported that Eboni warms and fades
little if any. Assuming this is true, I am happy to have prints that
are more stable and still within an acceptable color range.

As for the Gen4 black, I have beside me now one of the Tech Exchange
prints that was done with FS inks + Gen4 K. Side by side with the
same image printed BO with Eboni, just looking at the 100% patch, the
Eboni is cooler. So of those three, if you count the FS and Gen4
after they have warmed, the Eboni is the coolest.

However, I also have a BO print made for me last January with Museum
Black. It is cooler than even fresh FS-K, and has not faded or warmed
after nearly 10 months of naked exposure to nearly constant
fluorescent light and fairly bright indirect daylight. I was told
that Museum Black would be available in 2200 carts in January, so I'm
eager to try it. I'd be delighted if I could get prints with that
black, it's really pretty. It does seem to have a reputation for
clogging, so I'm a bit concerned, but can only try it and see what
happens.

Regards,
Clayton

Paul,

Is the special base the tea colored medium, and do you
know if it is available through MIS?

As I was quite fond of the tone of your previous
posting of the custom Eboni Selenium blend for the
1280 and piezo driver, have you concluded that this
base will sufficiently mix with Eboni?

By the way, excellent idea with the 3000 - I had
intended to wrap my fingers around one just as soon as
someone got the 4000 itch. Thanks for all your hard
work.

Don

Don,

You asked:

>Is the special base the tea colored medium, and do you

It is apparently an entirely different base. I've never seen it.

I'll find out. I'm not really sure if this new base is designed for
diluting inks or just for flushing the lines. I'll ask MIS.

I was lusting after a 4000 to replace the 3000, and it occurred to me that
an enormous base of 3000 owners is probably doing the same thing. As such,
it should soon be flooding the used market -- perfect for B&W printers who
don't need the latest thing. Of course, the 3000 has its weaknesses.
People will have to be sure they get a good one that doesn't band. And, of
course, thick papers are really not useable. However, EEM works great in
the 3000. I'll be searching for appropriate archival paper also.

I also see the first signs of 5000's and 5500's going for low
secondhand prices. The refurbs were already cheap. Though smaller
in print size the printengines are much more sophisticated than
the 3000 printengine. Especially the 5500 that has heads equal to
the 7600 heads.

Epson mentioned the 5000/5500 as the printer to be replaced by
the 4000. In most markets the 3000 is still sold by Epson while
the 5000 and 5500 disappeared from the catalogue. It is a dog to
do service on so that could be the Epson motive.

From the Epson Wide Format list:

>
I have an Epson 3000 that I will give to anyone who wants it. You
pay
shipping. I have the original box. The printer has not been used
much,
perhaps a 1000-2000 prints of various sizes. After I purchased my
7600
I quit using the 3000 and the nozzels clogged. I was going to
donate
the printer to a school so I ran some test prints. There were
many
gaps in printouts. After trying to get printer working things are
worse as now nothing prints. It seems nothing is coming out of
any
nozzels. If anyone wants for parts or whatever email me off list.
