BW on the Epson 2100/2200

BW on the Epson 2100/2200

2003-11-13 by johngoerlich

Somewhere I read (and I can´t find the message again to pinpoint it)
that somebody is using the 2200(which is the same as the 2100 minus
some software)for BO (black only?) printing. If my interpretation of
BO is correct than I would disagree. The 2100 at least has a button
for BLACK, but prints are made using colours. My BLACK (only ) prints
have much more metamerism than the prints made from grayscale files
printed under COLOUR. (Windows XP-PS 7). Perhaps I have misunderstood
something

After reading through various messages I get the impression that
there are now other inks than EPSON`s available for the 2100. Is this
correct and where do I find them.

Anybody can wants to offer some comments? Thanks

John

Black Only doesn't work for me when a Photo Black cartridge is
installed. Then it just prints with all colors. With Matte Black it
prints BO correctly. I suspect it's a bug in the 2100 driver not present
in the 2200 driver.

You can get prefilled BW cartridges from MIS. You'd have to call them
though, their web-site doesn't seem to be very up to date at the moment
as they just had a server crash and had to restore an old backup.

It might have been me, I am using a 2200 for BO printing.

Disagree with what?

I'm not sure what could be causing that. My 2200 driver has a
checkBox for "Black Ink Only", not a button labeled "Black". Here are
the settings I use:

1) Print Options, these are checked
- Minimize Margins
- High speed
- Black Ink Only

2) Paper And Quality Options
- Enhanced Matte Paper
- SuperPhoto - 2880 dpi

3) Color Management
- gamma 1.8
- brightness/contrast sliders centered at zero

MIS, Piezotone and Septone make inks for these printers. I'm using
the MIS Eboni black ink for my BO prints.

>Anybody can wants to offer some comments? Thanks

Until recently I used an 870 at 1440 dpi for BO prints with MIS FS
Black ink. With the 2200 I'm now printing at 2880 dpi (smoother look,
no dither banding, and higher resolution) and am using Eboni ink
(doesn't warm and fade like the FS ink). These prints are much better
looking and more stable than the 870/1440dpi/FS-K prints.

I don't know if the 2100 is different than the 2200, but for me
printing BO is very straightforward and easy, and there is definitely
no color ink mixed in. The prints are vibrant and luminous, have
great D-Max, and no metamerism.

I hope this helps.

Regards,
Clayton

Clayton is correct. The 2200 does BO prints with a flick of a switch
and there is no metamersim... it is just a personal choice if you
like the look... (I don't).

Clayton

After endless experiments with trying to get reasonable B/W prints using the
2100 I stumbled across your website and the article on Black only printing.
Whilst I was at first quite sceptical I am now a believer!

With the 2100's ability to print at 2880dpi I am getting really nice, full
toned prints. On a resent UK print exchange a number of people commented
on the quality I was achieving!

At the moment I am using the Epson Matte Black ink on Epson Archival Matte
Paper. This gives me a slightly warm print (similar to the old Record
rapid). I am quite happy with this, but noticed you are using the MIS Ebony
black ink for your BO prints. What would you say are the advantages with
this method? Is it more neutral than the Epson? Do you use this ink for your
colour prints as well?

Any comments would be appreciated?

To anyone in the UK: Where is the best place to buy MIS inks over here?

Cheers

Martin

Not any more, the 2200 is in this respect really different from
the 2100.The 2100 has no BO setting in the driver.

When using the BLACK option I have no choice of settings in the MODE
settings page, I must use EPSON CALIBRATION, all other choices -
except Gamma are greyed out.
In the Print with Preview dialogue I use the following settings:
Colour Management
Source: Grey Gamma 2.2
Target: Stylus Photo 2100
This works fine if printing B&W under the colour option, but may not
be the correct settings for printing under the BLACK mode.

I have run some tests using Epson Archival Matte with the matte ink.
Under the CoLOUR mode the greys are absolutely neutral, better than
anything I have had before. In the BLACK mode the print is too warm,
with a very slight sepia touch in large areas of medium to light grey
tones.
All this is under PS 7

What are the web addresses of these suppliers? I was mainly curious
too find out whether there are any non OEM inks for this complicated
machine.

It sure did. Thanks a lot.
