lcd vs crt monitors...off topic

2003-11-17 by morganbaily2001

This is obviously off topic but I thought i could get some expert
opinions from the group. I am in the market for a new monitor. I do
both color and black and white photography...mainly BW. I have been
considering an LCD monitor but have heard that color quality is not
as superb as a CRT. Your opinions and experiences would be greatly
appreciated as well as your choice for brand and model.

Thanks for your assistence

The gamut of an LCD is generally a bit narrower than a CRT, but for B&W you
don't care. The main problem is that most LCDs won't calibrate properly with
a colorimeter, even though the colorimeter is supposedly made for LCDs. The
only LCDs that will calibrate well are the really high-end ones that have an
extremely wide viewing angle. If you tilt the screen and the image looks
different, then it won't calibrate accurately, because the colorimeter
accepts light from a much wider angle than your eye.

feedback needed on macro anatomical images

2003-11-17 by Ron at BookCrossing.com

Lately I've been enamored with B&W macro work, particularly exploring
human (and animal) anatomy for good macro subjects. Here are my first 15
"keepers":

   http://www.primofoto.com/browse/Body-Parts-One

I'd appreciate feedback on them. For some reason, the images resonate
with me, and I hope that's not just because they're (partial) portraits
of my wife and dog. :)

I'm wondering about a new monitor too, and the most interesting
reference I've found on the subject is a Seybold 2002 White Paper on
the 21-inch Sony Artisan CRT. It's available by going to

http://displaysbysony.com/display/model.jsp?pModelId=577

clicking on the link to the Artisan micro site, choosing "TOUCH", and
then clicking on the White Paper's link (top right).

The Artisan comes with both the hardware and the software for
profiling it. And anyone who already has profiling resources with
which they're satisfied might consider instead Sony's other upscale
21-inch CRT, the GDM F520, which Sony shows at:

http://displaysbysony.com/display/model.jsp?pType=&pCode=&pModelId=558

For the past four years, I've been very happy with its 19-inch uncle,
the F420, now discontinued. Nevertheless, when I get a new Mac, I
think I might get an Apple Cinema LCD display to go with it.

Rick: I'm very happy with my LCD at home. Now I'm doing almost
exclusively b&w for photo work but it's a low end Samsung and seems to
meet all my needs. My only calibration was a contrast and brightness
adjustment done by eyeball to match my prints.

I have a real estate issue in my home office (too many scanners &
printers) thus making the LCD very practical. I do think if I had
unlimted desk space that I might consider a CRT. But to get the screen
size I wanted an LCD was the only option. At least it works well.

If you can, read this month's issue of Photoshop User magazine where
they go into detail on this subject. Bottom line: LCD's -- yes, even
the Apple cinema displays -- aren't there yet.

The rumour is that Apple will shortly unveil a new range of LCDs....
