No MIS PK fade info

No MIS PK fade info

2003-12-22 by Chris Hargens

I've looked on the MIS website and also searched the archives here
but haven't been able to find any information on fading for the MIS
PK ink. Anyone have information about fading?

I did initial comparative fade testing of the MIS and Epson black inks,
including the PK and Light K from both companies. The UC and MIS PK and LK
are all comparable and excellent -- better than the Epson Archival pigments.
(Epson Archival black is about like the old FS/VM K -- i.e., a different and
lower league.) It's the UC color pigs that "weaken" that inkset relative to
the Epson Archival color pigments.

Thanks, Paul, for information. I've made a few prints with UT inkset
on my new 1280 -- overall I'm happy with the tonal transitions, the
shadow and highlight detail, and the general look. What seems to be
lacking -- and, again, I've only made a few prints, so this is
provisional judgement -- is a strong, deep black. I got more of one
with the Generations black that I was using a few months ago. Anyway,
that lack of black is why I'm interested in exploring the semi-
gloss/semi-matte alternatives. Do the curves you've developed for
various matte papers (and the Eboni black) require much tweaking to
get good results with the MIS PK and Epson's semi-gloss/semi-matte
papers?

Gen Enhanced black is a hybrid dye/pigment that will probably produce a
deeper black than any pure pigment K.

Yes, I think that is a common reaction. With the luck we are having
controlling the bronzing with PremierArt spray, and with the Wilhelm ratings
of Premier Semigloss and the PremierArt spray, that approach has now become
very interesting to me also.

Dirk Hobman has probably done the most with the UT inkset and glossy papers.
I think that some tweaking will be necessary. He may be willing to share
his curves. He also wrote a good tutorial on modifying the curves that is
on the MIS "What's New" page.

I now have UT2 in my 1280, so I'm not in a position to know how the Premium
Semigloss works with the UT matte curves. I had tried a few other glossy
papers, and some worked fairly well.
