Mr Roark, or others.....
Could you provide a simple, entry level work flow and description of
appropriate ink cartrage selections to assist we novices in the use
of the UT2 inks.

Specifically,
1. How can I do Black Only, and/or Quadtone printing using a 1280
and the UT cartrages. Hopefully without any other software than that
supplied in Photoshop and by Epson.

2. How can I produce archival color prints using UT inks in the
1280, can this be done, again, with no additonal "actions" or
software.

My goal at this time is simply consistant output, from there I can
learn the more arcane elements as experience grows.

I believe this information would be helpful to many who are
overwhelmed by the high technical level of this forum.

Thank you for any help.

The UT2 1280 cartridges are sold by MIS (inksupply.com) at the page
http://www.inksupply.com/index.cfm?source=html/ultratone.html
(scroll down to near the end of the page).

With the UT2 "color" cartridge (ARC-T009-UT2), you need either the Eboni
black for matter paper (ARC-T007-UTK) or the Photo black for glossy
("barrier"/"RC") paper (ARC-T007-UPK).

My attempt to explain the inkset and workflow is at
http://www.inksupply.com/index.cfm?source=html/ut2comments.html
(MIS has it there, but it's a bit buried.)

Start with just a grayscale file and no curves. You don't even need
Photoshop.

I recommend you start with Epson Enhanced Matte paper. It's cheap at
http://www.atlex.com/Epson/paper/archival.htm

I think with this combination, you should be making nice prints with a
minimum of investment and frustration.

You can't print color with the UT inkset. It is a specialized B&W inkset.
If you want to print both color and B&W with a single printer, you need an
Epson 2200 and a good RIP like Image Print, or you need to just use the
black ink to print the B&W images.

I hope this helps you get started.

Jerry,

I don't have a workflow for the 2200 yet. Some on the list use the UT
inkset with it. I do intend to take the UT2 inkset to both the 2200 and
4000 in the future.

Hello Paul,

Is there a Hex set based on UT inks which is a 1:1
replacement for the Non variable MIS inks as the FS-E ?

Alex,

>Is there a Hex set based on UT inks which is a 1:1

Not yet. MIS might make a full line of UT-based "FS" inks out, but I'm not
sure. MIS has a problem with too many different products. So, you might
see them try to limit the ink selection.

Frankly, I think the FS-E approach (including the new Cone hextone ink
order) puts too much light ink in the mix. On matte paper, it is smooth,
but it also floods the papers. With glossy papers even the standard UT ink
can cause pooling of ink.

So, it may be that MIS will decide not to replace all the older inksets (at
least those that are pre-loaded into cartridges) and, for example, point
most 1280 users to UT2. For older hextone printers, it may be that a new
UT-FSE will be available only in bulk -- but I'm speculating.

Hi Paul and Alex,

Happy Holidays and I hope you don't mind my chiming in here...

Paul, are you working on any UT formulations and/or curves for the
Epson 2000? On the latest MIS pages I don't see any mention of their
ink plans for that printer. Bulk ink availability would be fine...

Thanks very much for any info you might have or be willing to
speculate on ;>)

Richard

Hi Paul and Richard !

If MIS does not plan to make a set of compatible inks, I will stock up
on the FSE. It works for me and my 2000P and have no need to change.

Richard & Alex,

No.

>... Bulk ink availability would be fine...

There may be several mixes that would work OK in that, although old vm
curves for the PC are all I ever wrote for it.

>If MIS does not plan to make a set of compatible inks, I will stock up on

I don't think MIS will totally stop selling any of the inks as long as there
is reasonable demand. It will probably be in the "legacy" category.

I would think that it would be easy for MIS to make the UT-FSE inks in bulk.
It's the carts that I suspect might more likely be dropped at some point.

If the 1280 carts fit the 2000P, it might be interesting to see what the UT2
inks look like in it.

Hi Paul and Alex,

Thanks for your quick response re the 2000P and FS-E inks/curves.
Alex and I have been corresponding about his work with the legacy FS-
E/2000P combination, and the examples he has shown me are very nice
indeed.

On the MIS site, I see they put a "tenative" end-of-life date on the
original FS/VM inksets:

"...The fade resistance of the Ultratones is so superior to any of
our other inks, that we are compelled to start phasing out the older
VM and FS inks. By the end of 2004 we hope everyone is converted to
Ultratones."

Regarding the "legacy FS/FSN" formulations, as you suggest Paul, I'm
sure that if the demand is there, MIS will meet it. That would make
Alex happy! :>)

Otherwise, another section of the MIS site states:

"...We are working on making Ultratone inks to replace the FS and FSN
inks. <snip>...This will be in four shades only for use in the 1160
and 3000 printers. Once this is done, the older FS and FSN will be
phased out."

While there are going to be response curve differences between the UT
and legacy based FS inks, it would also seem that an "FS-E" set could
be mixed from the four shades that MIS is planning to keep in their
line for the 1160 and 3000 printers. If MIS doesn't choose to do so,
isn't that something we could do carefully in the "kitchen sink" to
create the midtones that differentiate the FS-E formulations? Maybe
add a bit of ink limiting to prevent flooding...

Both the 1280 carts and CIS will fit perfectly in the 2000P -- just
takes a "chip-switch". As soon as I get a set of the UT-2's, I'd
volunteer to give that combination a try to see how it looks. That
would be a great solution, especially if we could make them work like
the "EZ B&W" or with optional curves for the UT-2/1280. Lot's of
2000P printers still out there looking for a renewed purpose ;>)

Thanks very much and Happy Holidays!

Richard

Re: ......basics please ....greyscale, mono, desaturate?

Thank you,
and if I may ask you to indulge me, one more question.

Is there any particular advantage to converting images captured in
RGB (I use a Canon 10D) to greyscale, as opposed to converting in
layers to mono and adjusting the sliders, or for that matter de-
saturating in layers (PhotoshopCS).

Thank you in advance.

If you are using one of the variable-tone inksets or partitioned workflows,
all color information must be removed from the file before printing or
applying the curves that control the inkset.
