Epson Papers?

Epson Papers?

2004-01-01 by Clayton Jones

Hello All,

I'm getting the itch to try some of the new papers, so some questions:

1) What is the difference between Velvet Fine Art and UltraSmooth?

2) Which one has the EEM coating on cotton paper?

3) Do either of these have OBAs?

4) How do these compare with Premier Fine Art?

5) Any other comments about these (Dmax, Flaking)?

Thanks very much.

Regards,
Clayton

I found some answers:

Velvet fine Art

PFA has no OBAs. InkJetArt.com puts it in same class as PhotoRag for
Dmax, any users verify this?

With Eboni in my 1280 PR gets an average 1.64 and UltraSmooth more like 1.6.
(In the 3000 it's an even larger gap -- PR goes up, UltraSmooth down.)

>5) Any other comments about these (Dmax, Flaking, general impressions)?

UltraSmooth is non-flaking and probably the most archival of the papers. PR
still gets the dynamic range prize for cotton papers (until the new Permajet
paper is released -- and I'll bet it's a new Hahnemuhle that will be
released at the same time).

Do you have any numbers for Premier Art paper? InkJetArt.com seems to
be pushing this pretty hard.

Clayton,

I've recorded about the same dmax (1.59) for PremierArt Fine Art Hot
Press (using Epson matte black) that Paul reported for UltraSmooth with
Eboni - I think that they are basically the same paper. This is also
a very warm, almost cream color, paper. The PremierArt Premium Matte
gave a dmax of 1.69 with Eboni, but it is a very cool, white paper with
OBA. Both papers have a very smooth surface and exhibit no flaking.

Clog from hell

2004-01-02 by Truman Prevatt

I have a clog in my 1280 - the fifth nozzle. I've tried multiple
cleaning cycles but still there. I tried a cleaning cart but still
there. I tried the windex trick but still there. Any other suggestions
would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Truman

Did you pump windex through with a syringe, or just apply it to the
parking pad? If you've tried pushing it through, did you also suck
it back through the head? Try that: gently push it through, and then
pull it back until you get air in the syringe. Dump the windex,
reload, repeat the process several times, and when you're ready to
test, put clean windex in it and leave it in until the cleaning
cycles flush it out and pull fresh ink in the head. If that doesn't
do it, you might be stuck with having the head replaced.

This could actually make it worse...no more than three cleaning cycles
in a row, then let it sit 6-12 hours. Not longer or shorter.

I tried a cleaning cart but still
> there.

It's a misconception that cleaning carts clear clogs...they don't.
Their purpose is as an intermediary when changing from one ink to
another, incompatible ink.

I tried the windex trick but still there.

There's three different tricks: 1) putting windex on parking pad, 2)
Injecting windex into nipple with syringe, 3) putting windex on paper
towel under head.

Of the three, #1 should be tried first in combo with letting head sit
6-12 hours. Don't let it sit for days, it can re-clog. Let it rest
6-12 hours...this will let any air pockets disapate- and not allow
nozzle to dry out anymore.

#2 is a good solution but it is the last thing you should try. If all
else fails type of thing. Some argue it is the best way, but I always
had sucess with a simpler method I descibe below.

#3 will not solve this particular problem, another misconception. It
is more for misfiring (nozzle steps not in uniform descending pattern,
i.e ink is deflected by dirt under head as it comes out) than clogs.

 Any other suggestions
> would be greatly appreciated.

The best thing to do at this point is wait the 6-12 hours and repeat
up to three cleaning cycles. If this doesn't work after two or three
tries with "rest periods", then simply insert OEM Epson carts,
hopefully fresh or <3-4 months old at least. Run some purge patterns
with the Epson carts and then try cleaning cycles again. You may be
surpised at how good this works.

Hello Jim

I am having absolutely no luck unclogging my 1270 and was hoping you
might elaborate a bit on the second method.

When you say "injecting windex into nipple with syringe" are you
referring to the nipple in the print head that pokes up into the
cartridge ?

Also, does this require a syringe equipped with a needle and if so what gauge ?

Sorry for being so thick but I've looked inside at the nipple that
pokes up into the cartridge and can't seem to see where you would
inject.

Thanks
Tim

Never mind, I was able to find detailed instructions on this method at;

Thanks anyway

i get a 1.68 pretty consistently with Hot Press, the
1.59 seems low to me. i really like this paper so far
after playing with a few boxes. it is worth a try for
sure.

What printer and ink are you using to get this dmax?

hi paul
i use a 1200, QTR and UT.
my readings will vary but the lowest reading i have
gotten is 1.64 the highest 1.72. i have noticed this
paper really needs time to "cure" to get a stable
reading. after 24 hours i have read 1.72 then days
later i will get 1.68 where it usually stays. i have a
few printouts where i get 1.66 or 1.64, i have been
jumping through some hoops trying to perfect my QTR
profile for this paper and so i have done lots and
lots of readings and it seems 1.68 is where i end up
most of the time.
