1160 Paper Feed Question

1160 Paper Feed Question

2004-01-17 by ritab19106@aol.com

I have always struggled with the paper feed on my Epson 1160 when using
heavier papers. The printer just shoots the paper right through without printing.
I've tried flipping the paper thickness switch, and have experimented with an
assortment of "backers" in various thicknesses. I also have held onto the
paper and tried to manually encourage the grabbing mechanism. Nothing has
consistently worked; one out of ten times things go fine for no reason that I can
ever determine.

I recall reading about a technique where the paper feeding button is
depressed first, before sending the file to the printer. Could someone elaborate on
this strategy? (Wouldn't it just feed the paper through without printing?)
Or, I would appreciate hearing of any other remedies that have been successful
for list members.

Thanks,

Rita Bernstein

Place the paper in the printer and tap the paper eject
button ONCE(the second button of the three buttons)the
paper will load and stop at the correct print
position. Then intiate the file printing from the
computer. It's that simple.

Thanks so much for helping out with this annoying problem. I followed your
instructions and, the first time, after some exertion on the printer's part,
the red paper feed light went on; the second time, however, it worked perfectly
(first time in days!) Does that red light problem occur for you too? Any
work-arounds for that if it continues to happen?

Thanks again,

Rita

Yes it does. I don't know of a work-around for this
problem. Maybe another list member does. Ninety five
percent of my printing is color and I use the 1160 for
my B&W only, so I get by with the manual loading
technique. It works most of the time and is far more
successful than the auto loading method.

Rita,

Automatic loading of 200+ weight papers has NEVER worked for me.

I use the "pre-loading" mentioned in the previous post.

It works for me virtually every time. When it doesn't, I get either the red
feed fault light or the paper passes straight through.

I have a backing board made of two 8 1/2 X 11 pieces of 4 ply mount board
taped together. This stays in the printer at all times. I place one sheet of
printing paper into the printer and while holding the trailing edge of the
sheet and applying slight pressure, I press the paper feed button.

Every 2 or 3 months, or if I am experiencing any persistent feed problems, I
take a sheet of paper and lightly spray Windex onto it and feed it through
the printer 3 times. I think some of the paper coating transfers onto the
feed rollers over time and makes them less able to grab paper. This seems to
clean them off sufficiently. As well, this is a good way to clean out the
printer if you happen to get ink on the rollers.

James,

Thanks for taking the time to write. 'Really appreciate it.

Do you feed the SAME paper sprayed with windex through the printer three
times? It doesn't fall apart? What kind of paper do you use?

Best,

Rita B

Rita,

I take a sheet of PhotoRag or Somerset velvet or German Etching, basically
any 200+ weight paper and spray about 3 squirts on one side of the sheet.
Not enough to soak it which would cause problems.

I try not to spray the very lead edge of the paper. If it gets soggy it
won't feed.

I then feed this sheet through 3 times. It might be a good idea to flip the
sheet over on the second run through to make sure you are hitting the bottom
rollers as well, but I never have and it may not matter.

Obviously, it is not an exact science but it does seem to do the trick.
