Epson Gray Balancer Experience

Epson Gray Balancer Experience

2004-01-18 by Mike Bergen

Before buying ImagePrint I decided to try the Gray Balancer using the Kodak
Gray Scale method previously suggested by another member of this newsgroup.
So far I have had limited success and I have a question for this group.
The Gray Balancer is a stand alone program that takes control of the 2200
print drivers. One first selects the paper type and then prints a built-in
grayscale and some sample images. If this has no color cast than one is
done. If there is a color cast than one prints out a set of color swatches
for 4 points on the scale. Using the Kodak Gray scale you select the 4
swatches that best match the scale and enter a three digit number for each
swatch. Then you print out a new grayscale with the corrected colors. You
then iterate this process to fine tune the colors.
The question is, since this process does not allow the use of any of the
correction curves/profiles that one would apply in Photoshop, how does it
correct for a real image printed using the 2200 via Photoshop w/soft proof?
I have yet to be able to eliminate a slight green cast in the lighter
values. I am using EEM.
Any comments would be appreciated.

I've only started playing with the Gray Balancer for other reasons
(compare to my Photoshop Duotone/Quadtone method), but it seems like
you could just refer to the 4 tone "fish scale" test print that the
GB produces and select one of the minus-green (magenta) sets of
values as input to correct your green cast. Do this repeatedly with a
test image until you are satisfied the the green tint is gone.

Mike,

I can't explain how the GB software interfaces with the Epson
profiles, but it apparently does as I get drastically different
output if I accidently select the wrong paper profile. I have the
GB software "on" all the time for both my B&W and color work. I
have pretty much eliminated the green cast and other significant
color cast from my B&W using EEM paper. I have to admit, it was a
lot of trial and error. It's not perfect, but it is a HUGE
improvement over what I was able to obtain just using the Epson
profiles without the GB. You may want to refer to a previous post I
made on this topic.. message number 40176. By the way, the accuracy
of my color output was noticeably improved also. Good luck!

"I have yet to be able to eliminate a slight green
cast in the lighter values."

Mike,

You won't ever be able to remove the green cast or
"metamerism" completely. I have blown a lot of time
and media working with Epson's Gray Balancer and it is
my opinion that it is impossible to get a neutral
black and white print out of the 2200 without going to
carbon pigments or printing black only. Even if you
take what you think is your closest print from under
incandescent light to daylight. The evil green will
appear. The best thing I did was to give up trying and
go to quadtones for my B&W.

Good Luck,

Bill

I would agree that it is hopeless... at least to be neutral across
all lighting... you may balance it good enough for one specific
lighting condition, but any changes will bring out the green (or
magenta) cast.

sorry,

PS Image Print does fix it though...

I have been using the Colorburst RIP demo since Friday. It seems to
pretty much eliminate the color cast (going from daylight to
incandescent) as well as producing a much-improved print in general. The
significantly faster print speed is an added bonus. (7600UC) There's a
limited choice in grey profiles, but even using the color profiles,
printing a greyscale image is much better than the Epson driver.

For the 7600, Colorburst w/o Postscript is $795, w/Postscript $995. No
yearly maintenance contracts. Image Print is $1495 plus $500/year
maintenance.
