Do UT2 carts self seal when removed?

Just did my first UT2 printing on 1280, using epson black because MIS sent me eboni cart for the wrong printer. Results so far are exceptional. However I do need to learn how to utilize curves so I achieve WYSIWYG. Am wondering if I can switch back and forth between EP color cart and MIS UT2 without special precautions to prevent dryout or clogging? Thanks for any help. M. Olson

Epson's own 1280 cartridges for the 1280 don't self seal, do they? Anyway, check out the MIS web site. Here's what they say about self sealing (in their their FAQ's nicely illustrated description of the Epson poppet-valve cartridge): "None of the clone cartridges on the market have these poppet valves. We don't think they have figured out how to insert the spring and the poppet valve while the cartridge is being injection molded. It is a good manufacturing trick. We do not know how they do it either." Phil Phil

I put scotch tape over the holes on the bottom and top. However they do leak since there is no valve inside. It is messy actually. Which makes me wonder; why do they not leak when in the printer? At any rate, they're handy gadgets, because they make vacuum-refillng easy if you're going to keep using dye inks. I found that if I tape the vent holes shut (after I've sucked out as much ink as possible with them open) and create a vacuum with a syringe, the valves keep the vacuum when I pull away the syringe. I then apply a loaded syringe to the chamber, and the vacuum sucks in the ink. Takes a little parctice to get the right vacuum, etc., but it's worth the effort! Steve Karafyllakis

Thanks for mentioning these; that makes the MIS web site statement (about no poppet valves in "clone cartridges") rather out-of-date. I guess the speculation might be that these aren't really "clone" cartridges--perhaps they fell off the back of a (Chinese) truck? ;-) Phil
