Eboni Black questions

Eboni Black questions

2004-02-26 by luisvcool

Hello. I have an Epson 2200 and a Mac with OSX10.3.2

I have seen a few posts where people say that Eboni Black has a higher Dmax on EEM than
Epson's MK. This is true ONLY for EEM?

Can one substitue just Epson's MK cartridge for Eboni Black and make B&W and color
prints without substituting the rest of Epson's color cartridges? If one can leave the Eboni
Black for making color prints with the rest of the Epson color cartridges, then new paper
profiles are needed?

Thanks.

I just asked the same question below (among other things) -- hadn't seen your
post. Hopefully we'll get some input...

I use Eboni in a 2200. I don't know about instrument-measured Dmax
compared to MK, but Eboni is cooler in color. They both have
excellent Dmax - to my eye they look equally intense, but the MK is
warmer. Perhaps someone with a densitometer will pop in here...

>This is true ONLY for EEM?

I have found it also true with PhotoRag.

Yes, I have done it, just to see what happened, and it made a very
nice color print. However, I do almost no color, so I'm not one to
judge how well the Eboni works in color prints compared to MK.

I don't know about that one, but I would guess "yes" because of MK's
warmer color.

I do Black Only printing with the Eboni and just leave the other carts
alone. The 2200 does a fine job with that and the Eboni is gorgeous
stuff.

Clayton

So, any other follow-up on this? Is anyone doing full color printing w. the
Eboni black installed, and, if so, do you just use the Epson profiles or are
custom profiles needed?

And, a question from my other post: how does the Eboni black look on glossy/
luster papers and how well (if at all) does it adhere to such papers? (Either
printing w. just the Eboni black on glossy/luster or full color w. the Eboni black
installed)

Yes, I print color on my 2200 with eboni black installed and it looks
pretty good. On matte papers that is. No special profiles used.

On glossy is it bad. The ink simply was not made to be printed on
glossy and it is sure evident of that when you try.

Have you tried spraying the print?

You should remake your profiles. I have a CFS from MIS with Eboni black and
intend to use Eboni for colour also. I will redo my profiles. But I am not
going to install it until I have used up my Epson OEM inks.

I do not think it's a matter of spraying as the eboni ink on glossy I
find just dull and lifeless. I guess spraying might help for that. As
a comparison I found MIS FS-N inks to look pretty good on glossy when
I used that in my 1160. It just smudged easily. Spraying that solved
that problem. With eboni on glossy it just looked so bad from the
get-go that I dropped the idea after my first try. Not sure why as I
did not think the eboni was that different than the FS-N formula in
terms of how the ink sits.

I am surprised by your comments given the success people have had with BO
printing on semi-gloss with Eboni (the spray was simply to fix the ink and
stop it from rubbing off). I would have thought that if BO printing with
Eboni on semi-gloss was good then colour printing on semi-gloss using Eboni
black would be good also.

At times when I need a color print I run the MIS
Glossy Pigment inks with Eboni in my 1280 on matte
papers. I use the profiles downloadable from MIS and
have acheived excellent results.

It's $275 for a short job; $450 1/2 day; $700 day.
