"Septone" inks for the Epson 4000

"Septone" inks for the Epson 4000

2004-03-22 by petroscans

Curious:

What is the word about Variable Tone inksets for the Epson 4000?
I'm wondering also if MIS (or others) have plans/intentions to
create All-Black inks for the 4000, or is this even necessary?

I'm using the 1280 with a CIS system using MIS Full Spectrum. I'm
mostly interested in the 4000 just for the 16x20" capabilities. So,
finally, will the 4000 allow one to make Hiqh-Quality, All Black Ink
prints and color prints without swapping ink tanks?

Thanks!
Chris

Chris,

I have one on order. The UT2, UT7 inkset development is aimed at the 4000.

Chris,

Septone is in final development for the 4000. The inksets are
already in place because of the 7600 and 9600, but the driver is
different and should be ready within a couple of months. This will
allow you to use 220ml Septone Cartridges in the 4000. This is the
same setup that Andy Summers (lead guitarist for the rock band
Police) is using in his 9600 currently. Andy's work is absolutely
incredible. Everything from photos of Sting and himself in the glory
days, to more recent work of Spain which is to die for.

Are there any plans to offer Mac support for the Septone system for wide-
format printers (7600/9600 (and 4000))? If I understand correctly,
PixelPicasson RIP is required to run Septones on the 7600/9600, but it is
Windows-only.

I've seen a beautiful B&W print from the 4000. Don't know how it was printed, other than
that is used the std driver.

From what Epson has told me I expect to make great B&W "as shipped".

I'll play skeptic here and suggest you (and we all) lower our expectations of
the 4000 "as shipped" for B&W. Unless Epson has radically redisgned the
drivers a la ImagePrint, the best to be hoped for is neutrality in a single
lighting condition known beforehand, not the elimination of metamerism. And
if they have so radically redesigned the drivers, I can't think of any reason why
such drivers couldn't be made available for existing Ultrachrome printers.

Don't get me wrong: I would love for an Epson ultrachrome printer to produce
neutral, non-colorshifting B&Ws out of the box. But I ain't holding my breath. If
I'm wrong, I'll buy 2 4000s and take my words back immediately.

Re: "Septone" inks for the Epson 4000

And just on the off chance that anyone form Epson reads this stuff: what I think
everyone (OK, maybe just me) would really love is a 12 color Ultrachrome
printer: the 8 inks currently in the 4000; plus 3 more varying density grayscale
inks; plus a gloss optimizer coating like the R800. This would seem to me to
be a simple case of Business 101: sell the razor blades, not the razors. A 12
color printer would cost a lot more than current models, but couldn't possibly
cost as much as 2 printers (one w color inks and one w. grayscale), so a lot of
(serious) people would gobble them up. Then Epson can charge us double
the price for each grayscale ink cartridge as compared to the color ones. OR,
users who have no need for grayscale capability could configure it to hold
extra C, M and Y for double printing speed. Or whatever. Epson currently
seems to be in the business of selling the razors rather than the blades: make
great printers, but let other companies (MIS, Lyson, Colorbyte, Septone,
whoever else) get rich selling the blades.

(And while I'm at it: as interesting as the forthcoming Epson digital rangefinder
sounds, I'd rather see Epson's R&D $ go toward printers and inks, and buy my
cameras elsewhere).

Ah, if I only had several million dollars and control over a multinational
corporation....

Paul,

Pretty exciting possibilities using the 4000.
Although, I'm leaning toward dedicating a 7600 or 9600 to B&W.
