Will UT1 hex minus 2 inks work with an 1160?

Will UT1 hex minus 2 inks work with an 1160?

2004-04-24 by Richard Smallfield

Hi,
I posted a message entitled 'Two possibly terminal 1200 clogs' - but perhaps my subject line was misleading.

I had some specific questions, but the subject probably put people off.

I repeat the questions here:
1. Would the UT1 inks work in an 1160 if two of the inks were removed?
2. I have seen a 2000P advertised 2nd hand - and gather that it *might* work with these inks ... any thoughts? Mind you, second-hand printers have always led to more trouble than they're worth for me, having had three of them.

But I'm tempted to go for broke and get a 2100 - there comes a time when you have to quit messing about and get things to your clients on time if you want to have any business at all.

The 1160 is one of the supported printers for UT1. The inks are the same as
the hextone, but with no LC and LM. The M & Y positions are also switched.
The toner goes in the yellow position. The light gray (what would be in the
hextone yellow position) goes in the M spot.

I have EEM and Epson UltraSmooth curves for the 1160 & UT1.

The 1160 is a good old workhorse. I just retrieved mine from one of my
kids' rooms at set it up in my office again. It is just the simplest
printer to use for ink development, among other things.

The 1160, however, cannot match the 1290 and 2100 quality. The lack of a
light toner shows on very close inspection. Also, the black ink does not
appear to be as smooth. That said, for matte paper it's fine. (If you want
to print glossy paper, get a 1290 or 2100 and UT2 or 7.)

Paul would you say that the 2100 + UT7 can even improve the quality
of a 1290 with UT2?

(I tried to ask this yesterday already but somehow my own text got
lost on its way)

Thanks, Bernie

Bernie,

I have not tried the UT7 in the 2100, but if the 2100 is essentially the
same as the 2200, then is it an improvement in a few respects.

One advance in the 2200 over the 1280 is that the driver has some adjustment
for the ink limits. By increasing "Color density" up to 20%, the dmax on
some papers can be improved significantly. These papers include un-coated
Arches and the almost artifact-free Epson Glossy Photo paper.

The light black of the 2200 is usually not very noticeable. However, with
no curves or sliders used, it significantly improves the smoothness of
printing un-coated papers like Arches Hot Press.

The 2200's individual color ink carts are also a source of flexibility. The
yellow position ink is especially one that some people will want to replace
with a light gray (like the light cyan UT7 ink).

So, while the print quality of a 1280 & 2200 are usually about the same, the
2200 has some advances that really do make significant differences in some
circumstances.

Hello Paul, Bernie,

The 2100/2200 also has the rear sheet feeder for heavy stock. I'm
finding I have to use it for Merlin Smooth.

Clayton
