OS-X, Eboni and RC papers

OS-X, Eboni and RC papers

2004-04-29 by Steve Kale

Hi all

A while back there was a discussion of printing with Eboni to RC paper such as Epson
Premium Semi-gloss and fixing the print with Lyson Print Guard to avoid rub off and gloss
differential. I would like to know how people were duping the Epson driver with respect to
media type.

To clarify, I just today installed a CFS from MIS on my Epson 2100. I ordered the CFS with
Eboni ink rather than the standard Universal ink. However, the cart set they sent me as
part of the CFS has the black position chipped as Photo black (T0341). As a result,
whenever I try to print with the Epson driver with a matt media type I get the classic Jobs
Stopped problem. I can only print if glossy or semi-gloss is selected in the media type.
(With driver 1.6b from the Epson UK website, all media types are visible and able to be
selected, ie both matt and gloss.) I called MIS and they have kindly agreed to send me a
Matt chip (so that the black cartridge is consistent with the ordering of an Eboni cartridge
subject to the resetting needs of the CFS.) However, I am wondering how, once I replace
the chip, I will be able to print to RC papers. Were people simply ignoring the media
change and still selecting Archival Matt Paper even when printing to semi-gloss? Or are
my CFS chips messing with OS-X and the Epson driver ie a whole different problem?

Regards

Steve

Hi Steve,

I use Epson UC inks in a 2200. This post I made on the IP forum may
be of some help. You will have to fool your printer by changing out
a chip from Photo or some other work around. But, yes the matt inks
can work with Premium semi-gloss. See my post below.

"For those who do not mind spraying a print with Image Shield or
other protective sprays I offer the following experience. I use
Epson Matt UC ink with the above papers (RC Papers), IP 5.6 with the
Photo Black profiles, both BW and Color. No ink is smeared on the
rollers. I
am able to run the print through the printer a 2nd time without
adverse effects. After 24 hour drying time I spray 1 or 2 coats of
Image Shield (Premier Art) depending on the paper used. Gloss
differential is totally to almost totally eliminated, the contrast
and brilliance increased and the print protected from smudges, etc.
I did wax with a conservators wax after the spray dried initially,
but have found that it is not necessary. The best paper to date,
needing only one coat of Image shield is LexJet semi matt (a luster
type of paper) Very pleasing. Using the matt ink with photo black
profiles does not significantly alter the color balance. With BW
printing the tone of the print is dead on with the tint picker set
to 50, 50. The blacks have a dense dmax to my eye, but since I do
not have a spectrophotometer I cannot say for sure the dmax is
better than using photo K inks. If someone with the means to check
this I would be quite interested. The benefits are quite obvious.
No need to change carts for glossy or matt papers and perhaps a
better dmax black. I would like to hear if others have tried this."

Hope this helps some.

Steve,

Assuming you have Eboni in the K position slot, it doesn't matter which
media type you select for printing BO to semi-gloss or other RC papers
because the ink is just sitting on top of the surface. I used the
Enhanced matte setting, but it really doesn't matter which you choose.
You must of course spray with PrintShield later.

Re: [Digital BW] OS-X, Eboni and RC papers

2004-04-29 by Steve Kale

Carl

Thanks. That makes sense. I am hoping that I can also use this for colour
on semi-gloss as well (profiling a sprayed test chart etc). I had asked MIS
whether it was possible to change out the Ebony slot for Epson UC Photo
Black in order to print to RC when needed. They said yes that that would be
practicable. Now that I see this thing installed I realise that swapping
anything is completely impractical. Even taking whole CFS out could end up
being a very messy affair because of the lack of valves on the MIS carts.

Cheers

Re: [Digital BW] Re: OS-X, Eboni and RC papers

Thanks Paul I too had tried Epson OEM MK on RC paper but was not happy with
the results. I found that even after a few coats of Lyson Print Guard one
could smudge them. I also didn¹t find that the bronzing was eliminated
enough. I wanted to switch to a CFS and to also try Eboni and so I got a
CFS from MIS.

Hi Steve,

I use Epson UC inks in a 2200. This post I made on the IP forum may
be of some help. You will have to fool your printer by changing out
a chip from Photo or some other work around. But, yes the matt inks
can work with Premium semi-gloss. See my post below.

"For those who do not mind spraying a print with Image Shield or

but have found that it is not necessary. The best paper to date,
needing only one coat of Image shield is LexJet semi matt (a luster

No need to change carts for glossy or matt papers and perhaps a
better dmax black. I would like to hear if others have tried this."

Hope this helps some.
