1200 v 1160 - inkflow reliability

1200 v 1160 - inkflow reliability

2004-05-22 by Richard Smallfield

Hi,
I've had to retire a 1200 printer from using UT1 inks, because it was so hard to keep the inks flowing.

The HP 7660 is brilliantly reliable, but I miss A3 Photo Rag prints.

After seeing Roy Harrington's print comparison page (thanks a lot Roy), I've started wondering whether an 1160 might be a more reliable alternative, because of the larger droplet size - and I'd definitely use it with a CFS.

(I found that most of my ink problems started when I changed carts - I couldn't get the ink going again - so a CFS must surely be easier.)

Is an 1160 likely to be much more trouble-free than a 1200? I can't afford the time I spent tinkering with the 1200 trying to keep it going.

thanks,
Richard

Richard,

Although I do like the 1160 -- its a classic, it does have a small
drop size which is why the test comes out so smooth.
Reliability is a different issue.

Richard:

I use an 1160 with a CIS kit and as far as ink flow it is pretty much
utterly reliable. I have had problems with pigmented ink residue
collecting on the bottom of the print heads, necessitating frequent
cleaning, but not recently since using a different ink formula, so I
can't blame that on the printer.

I use a quad black system and for my use the 1160 is a terrific
printer. I'm looking for another one as a backup / second ink set.

That said, I can't imagine why any printer would fail to flow ink
from a new cart unless the heads themselves were clogged. If you
send me your email address off list I'll send you a word doc
attachment with some pretty comprehensive cleaning procedures that
might resurrect your 1200.

Hi Richard,
I use the 1160 with FS N and CFS and made about 100 or 120 prints
(most of them large format). After installing the CFS I printed and
printed and ... means had no troubles with bending or whatever.
The prints on Photorag look to me awesome (as well as those on EAM).
Because of the larger format I think of purchasing the Epson 4000 -
but that's another story for another day.

Greetings from Old Europe
Albert

Enjoy printing!
