Epson 860 for $10 or 1200 for about $75

Epson 860 for $10 or 1200 for about $75

2004-06-15 by siklosg

I have a chance to purchase the above mentioned two printers for the
above mentioned prices used. Which one should I buy? (No I don't want
both...) I'm intending to only print letter sized prints.

The MIS website is a little confusing to me since it says that there's
no UT or UT2 available for the 1200.

Which one has the better print quality? Other suggestions are most
welcome too!

Thanks,

The 1200 is a 6 Picoliter printer, while the 860 is a 4 Picoliter printer. Which means the
860 has smaller dots.

The 860 is the smaller version of the 1160 which excels using Piezotone/FS/FSN inks.

See Roy's Dot page:

Actually MIS does not have inks for the 1200 - it's been in the planning stages for a long
time.

So my vote is the 860.

The 860 is just the little brother of the 1160. I love my 1160 w/ the
MIS FS Neutral inkset.

I agree - and the 1200 is prone to severe banding. Go
with the 860 and you will be happy with the results.

One can use the VM curves with the UT1 inks with the 1200 - it says so on the site somewhere. It's not as good as dedicated curves, but nice results can be gained. I use my HP 7660 for portraits though, as much smoother skin tones are gained.

I have had a lot of trouble with ink flow with the 1200, however, and some smooth-toned prints look rough next to the reliable HP - the droplet size must be a lot bigger, I presume.
