BO differences

BO differences

2004-07-07 by Johnny Eades

Hello all,

I have two Epson 1280 printers and when I print the same image using
the same ink (Eboni) the results are decidedly different. With the
older printer the blacks are about one Zone lighter than the print
from the newer printer. I can make adjustments to accommodate this
difference, but I wonder what is the reason for such a large
difference in ink laydown. Front end on both is 20% dot gain and
back end is 15% and proofed at 20% dot gain. The older printer image
is even warmer that the newer printer image, but I filled both the
black cartridges at the same time from the same bottle of ink. That
eliminates the possibility of differences in ink content coming into
the equation. I haven't, or understand the need to make printing
adjustments to the older printer to get the same results from both
printers, but if that is going to be needed; there's no problem with
that, but I would like to know what is causing the initial
differences in prints. Any and all views on this will be appreciated
and tried by me to further learn about printing idiosyncrasies.

Hello Johnny,

Wow, that is strange. How about swapping the carts...that will show
whether the difference is in the cart or something in the printer.

Clayton

Johnny,

Another thought...Is there any difference in the dither pattern as
seen with a loupe, and in particular, does one have worse dither
banding than the other?

Hello Clayton,

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried switching the carts with no
change in the resulting prints, and then I changed the FE to 20% and
the BE to 10% with "Proof at 10%" and adding a curver to give screen
image like other print, and the one that was printing much lighter
did print darker and more like the other printer set with FE=20% and
BE=15% proofed at GG1.8. I'll just need to make these adjustements
each time I do BO on this particular printer. I don't use this often
so I run a BO print through it to keep the nozzles open. The color
nozzles seem to stay cleared.

Well, that answers that question. At least you know it's not the
carts.
Are the drivers the same version for both?

Hello Clayton,

I am using both from the same computer. Wouldn't that mean they both
used the same installed driver? Makes me wonder.
