1160 clogging with UT-FSN

1160 clogging with UT-FSN

2004-07-22 by Stefan Kirsch

I am using for the first time UT-FSN inks on an Epson 1160. Somehow I can
not reliably solve a clogging problem. After a few cleaning cycles and
waiting until the next morning all nozzles appear to be free. When start
printing very soon some nozzles clog. I also get dark traces here and there
on the paper. It looks to me as if ink is leaking somewhere. I try to clean
the nozzle head by putting some cloth in the path of the print head and
sliding the head a few times over it. This seems to improve it, but after
new cleaning cycles the dark traces come back.

Sometime also vertical lines look very fuzzy as if the ink droplets get
scattered on their way to the paper surface.

Any suggestions what it could be and how to solve it?

Regards, Stefan

Hi Stefan
Have you checked the ink dump pad for excess ink. The dump pad is on
the right side of the printer where the print head parks itself. When
you do a cleaning cycle the excess ink collects here and I presume
over time evaporates. If you are doing a lot of cleaning cycles then
maybe this dump pad is overfull and that is why you are getting drips
of ink on your prints. Solution is to press the ink refill button to
get the print head to the far left, remove power from printer (just
for safety) and then very carefully soak up the excess ink in the
dump pad with kitchen paper. Make sure the rubber seal around the
dump pad is clean and undamaged. You can get better access to the
dump pad if you take the top off the printer - just 4 screws. Clean
around the area with care and the feed rollers but I would strongly
advise you that you do not touch anything else. If there is ink
everywhere just use a small amount of water on soft cloth. When you
are finished you can push the print head back to its park position on
the right and then plug the printer back in.

Be carefull these printers are delicate!!

Hopes this will help.

Hi Peter,

Thanks. Cleaning the dump pad has help a lot. There are no dark
traces anymore. But I still have that clogging problem. Mainly with
black. I have wasted one cartridge already. It not only cloggs but I
also get very fuzzy vertical lines. Maybe I got something in front
of the print head. Is there a good way to clean the head itself?

Stefan

Stefan,

although I cannot help you much with your specific 1160/UT-FSN
problems, I can point you to a very helpful website with all sorts of
tips and tricks for diagnosing and 'therapying' Epson printing
problems:
http://www.mwords.co.uk/pages/printers/index.html
It helped me to get rid of rather persistent microbanding in BO
printing on my 1290.

Hope you can find something useful there

Wolf

touch off list)
