Setting up a 7000 for quad printing-4 channels?

Setting up a 7000 for quad printing-4 channels?

2004-07-27 by john dean

I am setting up an Epson 7000 with Piezzotone selenium inks and see that the inkset
contains 4 inks. What do I do with the two other channels? Surely something has to be in
there to keep the heads from drying out. Do I order carts that are clear medium to put in
there? In the future I would like to try using a sepia cart in one of them if possible.

Also, if anyone has any experience or suggestions about using QTR with this set up that
would be very helpful. I know I need to have profiles made for that rip procedure.

Thanks,

John

It depends on which software you're using. The old Peizo (R9) driver put
the same density in the light as dark ink positions.

The new Piezo ICC approach has the following ink positions:

New C = old C,
New LC = old M,
New M = old M,
New LM = Y, &
New Y = old Y.

QTR may be the way to go given what you seem to want to do.

You may find the PiezoTone "sepia" is more like the MIS UT2/7 carbon tone.

Its funny how the extra inkjets present a dilemma on what to do with them.
The traditional Piezo solution has been to just double up and duplicate two
of the inks. There is no benefit with the duplicate inks, but given the original
plugin or the Epson driver with ICC profiles there's no way to take advantage
of the other inkjets. With a RIP that controls the inks separately it opens up
the possibility of using the extra inks in some creative way.

The natural thought is to have two colors available but with only 2 extra inks you
don't have room for another complete set of piezotones. I think there are a
few people that have tried some of the possibilities. You could just use
two of the sepia set -- and as long as you blended the output with the
full selenium set you would probably get a nice smooth result. This will
probably allow you a mild variation on the tone from pure selenium to a
reduced carbon sepia color. If you get into mixing inks the possibilities
are endless.

John,

as you've already heard, one approach is to double the
cyan-position and magenta-position inks. The benefit of
that in your 7000 is that it can make for smoother transitions
because it will minimize device dots with proper profiling.
By today's standards, 7000 dots can get pretty unsightly.
Too bad that there are no intermediate dilutions of PTs
in 220 ml carts....

The other approach is to get 2 tones of another PT color
and blend them - but then you would be best served if you are
on OS X and use either QTR or IJC/OPM.

Whatever you do, beware of printing without using all 6 nozzles.
Eventually you will get badly dried heads. I have to say, however,
that the Piezotones are extremely well-behaved that way. They
are capable of re-diluting dried ink at the heads even after
months of no use. It's just a big hassle and a waste of time to
revive dried heads.

One advantage to loading the PTs "by the book" is that you can
share profiles with other users if you use IJC/OPM or QTR.
My 9500 is now loaded that way, for example, and I'm sure my
IJC profiles can be used on a 7000 with just one linearization
pass.

My current load order is (left to right):
Museum Black
Darkest gray
Darkest gray
Medium gray
Medium gray
Light gray

The alternative you may have in mind could be...

Museum Black
Darkest gray (SEL)
Medium gray (SEL)
Medium gray (SEP)
Light gray (SEL)
Light gray (SEP)

As you can see, you can't fit a Darkest gray (SEP). This means you have to decide
if you can use the Medium gray (SEP) as toner for the lower tones without
overloading the paper, or substitute the Medium gray (SEP) for a Darkest gray (SEP)
and hope you won't see dots in the mid tones. In all, you may end up with a bit
of crossover, but it may be subtle or just desirable for what you are printing.

For "real" toning, the UT inksets seem to offer a bigger range of moves with
Cyan and Sepia toners - but to my knowledge they don't make these versions
available in 220ml carts. You'd have to load your own - which may be an
exercise worth going through if only for the learning experience.
