QTRbeta3 and Win2K....image problem

QTRbeta3 and Win2K....image problem

2004-08-16 by njfranknj

I finally got the combo running thanks to Roy's new instructions, BUT,
even though I set the paper size to Super B and my Photoshop image
size is 12.95x19.00, per the Epson driver setting, I only get about
1/4 of the image printed and it doesn't start in the right place -
it's nearly in the center, despite the fact that it only prints the
bottom right corner of the 30 Meg image. Tonality is nice and the
ability to vary it; microbanding is visible under a loupe.

Below is a copy of the QTR file with the settings I used (with the
blend set for full warm tone).

Same problem I have when I print 11x8.5 on letter on Epson 2200.

Exact same problem.

IS I print 10x8, everything goes fine
If i try 11x8.5, is goes just like you described.

Try to print 12x18 and see what happens.

Re: [Digital BW] QTRbeta3 and Win2K....image problem

2004-08-16 by Roy Harrington

The problem is that the printer is not capable of printing an entire
sheet. The bottom margin is especially problematic because once the
paper leaves the back roller the quality drops down considerably.

So the way things are now, for sheet paper, is that you have to leave
at least 1/8 inch all around and you really ought to leave at least
.55 inches on the bottom for best quality. Max image on a 13x19
sheet would be 12.75 x 18.75 and if you want centered, best quality
limit yourself to 12.75 x 17.89

(btw, I think you'll find the same values in the Epson driver).

RE: [Digital BW] QTRbeta3 and Win2K....image problem

2004-08-16 by Nelson Ricciardi

Roy

That´s exactly the numbers the Epson driver gives me.

Problem is: I can send any file to the Epson driver and it takes care of any
size problem.

QTR doesn´t. QTR prints something that is wrong. And in the process it makes
we spend paper and ink.

Is it possible to use some defensive program and avoid this? Something like
"i´m not going to pring this because it´s too big"?

I'll have to look into that possibility.
Do you think refusing to print when it doesn't fit is best?

For me it would be better than wasting a full sheet by printing a
small block in the middle of the sheet. Advice on what to do about it,
that is, trim the edges, 1/2 inch or so, would be useful, too, in case
there are other reasons to abort the print.

I'm a little confused by your statements about image quality at the
edges in reference to my original message: I'm not talking about loss
of quality at the edges, my page file has a blank space (pure ehite
paper) for at least 3/4 inch all around, but the actual image was
chopped down to only one corner(less than 1/4 of the total image area)
and that was centered on the sheet with several inches wasted space
all around.

I send a file to the printer that is the same size as the paper,
regardless of the image size because I want to be able to place the
image on the page as I see fit, not just centered, and that's easiest
to do in Photoshop, where I can actually see where it lies. Normally,
I do a dest strip at one end before printing the full image; I place
that strip at one edge of the paper and leave out the full image, then
omit the strip and print the full image in the clear area on the same
sheet. It solves some problems for me due to my sporadic printing
splurges and long periods of lay-off. The test strips often see
further use in my wife's hands by being made into bookmarks.
