4000 RIP Advice, Please

4000 RIP Advice, Please

2004-08-17 by cschaible94111

Hi All:

Just got a 4000, now need some advice re RIPS. Couple of questions:

1) Is it possible to make high quality B&W prints with ImagePrint
and Ultrachromes? What's the metamerism situation with this combo?

2) Is StudioPrint with Piezotones a better B&W solution? Could it
possibly be worth what Cone is charging for it?

3) Are there any other RIP/ink combinations worth considering?

I know these subjects have been addressed here before, so I'm really
just hoping for a quick update from those of you who are using these
products.

Thanks in advance.

Chuck

Chuck-

I use Cone's piezotones on a 1280, and they are indeed beautiful. NOT
perfect, but then neither is the UT7 MIS inkset. But they seem to have a
slightly longer curve in the shadow area, but I am still working out my
workflow on the UT7, so that could change soon.

Chuck-

I don't know anyone who uses Studio Print for the 4000. If you look
at what you get, it isn't really that much more than Image Print (it
looks like it includes ink and a gretag calibrator of some
sort)...but why would you convert a 4000 to BW only??? And switching
back and forth would be at a cost of more than $100 in ink to flush,
so not really an option.

As for image print. There is no solution that totally elimintes
metamerism. That is why IP comes with profiles based on lighting the
print will be viewed in. However, if you stick with matte papers, the
amount of metamerism is virtually non-existant (I don't even bother
with any profile but daylight and I get stunning results that I
mainly view under tungsten). With some glossy papers, there is a very
slight to significant bronzing. Some people don't even notice it,
some hate it. If framed and veiwed head on, it is invisible, even in
the worst cases.

You don't say whether you are mac or windows...but I assume windows
(if mac, search archives here for QTR and other mac solutions).

For me the Image Print choice was a no brainer...color, BW (and
toning) and great support (I already knew that from the 2200). If you
buy the version 5.6, you will get a free upgrade to the 6.0 for
windows whenever it is available.

cheers,

Tom O'Connell

I would convert a 4000 to B&W only in an instant and probably will if
my print sales justify the cost. It is much more of a production
printer than anything available in it's size and price.
