BO 1160 vs 1290 vs 2100

BO 1160 vs 1290 vs 2100

2004-08-25 by bwbonkers

Hi all

I have been printing BO with a 1160 and have been impressed with the
results compared to using the full inks set - MIS UT inks - Eboni
black. Now I need to print colour photos, so am considering upgrading
my printer to either a 1290 or 2100 and using BO printing for my B&W.
Taking price out of the equation, which printer produces the better
BO printing 1290 or 2100. Would I see any real world differences in
print quality compared with my 1160 prints. I could keep my 1160 and
buy another printer for colour but unfortunately I do not have the
space. I print the odd A3 hence the choice between 1290 and 2100. I
would also continue to use Eboni black ink and EAM /PhotoRag paper.

Sorry if this has been asked before.

Peter,

If your 1160 is in good shape, consider loading the
color positions with MIS glossy pigment color inks.
The 1160 while old still produces fantastic color
results (and you would save a few bucks in the
process).

Considering a batch of prints from a BO print exchange
a few months back, the output between the 1290 and
2100 are very similar if both are using Eboni black.
That being said, I prefer the dither from the 1280/90
printers over the 21/2200 but that is just personal
preference. If you like your 1160 BO dither and final
prints, I can't see any reason to upgrade until your
printer fails as it still will produce excellent color
results.

If the 1160 can yield acceptable BO for you why not use it for color
prints, too. I find that it makes even superior color prints than my
newer C80 printer using MIS 7600 inkset (not glossy pigments).

To use the 1660 with MIS 7600 inkset you need to create profiles with
a spectro-based profiling tool but the result is simply amazing.
Excellent rendering of shadow tone and details though slightly
grainier under a loupe. To profile the C80 I had to use the less than
ideal color control mode to open up the shadow and still the result in
inferior than the 1160 at NCA mode.
