I recently saw an ad for a digital enlarger. It was based on a
DeVere. Has anyone any experience of printing onto silver paper in
this way?
thanks again

I just ordered a print from one of my files from San Miguel Lab in New
Mexico printed in a DeVere. I will post the verdict after it arrives.

Last week, I also ordered an 11 by 14 enlargement from a PS worked file from the lab
with the DeVere enlarger. And at the same time I ordered (from a different lab that
does only B&W work) an 11 by 14 enlargement of the same negative in order to
evaluate the results of both processes. While both photos are to be on fiber based
glossy paper, warm tone, unfortunately one paper is Kodak and the other is Ilford. I
also gave both labs ink jet prints of the subject matter and the same instructions of
what I wanted the enlargements to look like.

I will post my evalulation when I get both enlargements.

Nelson,

I have to say I'm dissapointed with the results. The process isn't what I
had originally expected. They want you to send a color file. Not a grayscale
in RGB but the original image before it was converted to rgb. If you shoot
B&W then you obviously can't do that. My image was converted from a color
scan so I sent that to them along with the Monochrome image for reference.

The print is of excellent quality but looks nothing like the reference B&W
that I sent them. It looks like the Red channel from the original image.
Lighter and more contrasty that the reference image by far. The other thing
that is very noticeable for me is posterization. The beautiful tonal
transitions that I worked so hard to preserve have been destroyed. It's hard
to quantify, so I hope I'm not being unfair to San Miguel Labs, but the
bottom line is that the print is unacceptable by my standards. My initial
standards dictate that the print should be of at least the same tonal
quality as an inkjet. No posterization and at least the same tonal
gradation. I do a fair amount of Lightjet also and the tonal quality is
beautiful. I'm looking for that same thing in my silver prints.

Having said that I think there is potential but you would have to pay for
their portfolio grade printing and probably go through a few print
iterations before they gave you what you wanted. Again, it's the image
quality that is not acceptable. The Print quality is excellent.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the heads up on San Miguel Labs.
Maybe they will respond with info on how to
order B&W prints from them.
